The Role Model – Armed with years of experience, Florin Sopcu shares his story about being a mentor for a new generation of models
Who would’ve thought that this Romanian model was once a professional rower. Florin Sopcu was discovered when he was 18 years old and since then he has walked for some of the biggest fashion houses around the world, from Louis Vuitton, Dolce & Gabbana to Roberto Cavalli, to name just a few. And he’s not slowing down. With big fashion campaign on the way he still manages to find the time to be a mentor with his own modelling agency, Dejavu Models Management, based in Bucharest, Romania.
DAMAN: Hi, Florin, how are you doing these days?
Florin Sopcu: Hi! I am just relaxing after intense presentations for the men’s collections and enjoying the first sunny days at home after a long winter. Also I’m preparing for a fashion campaign in Europe.
DAMAN: You’ve walked on the runway of so many top tier brands and also became the face of many of them. So far, what would you say was your most memorable fashion show, photo shoot or campaign?
Florin Sopcu: An unforgettable moment was when I started walking for Louis Vuitton. Nerves were running high, it was something totally unexpected, they called me at 12 o’clock at night, telling me to be there first thing in the morning, but the big surprise was when I found out they actually wanted me to close the show! Also walking for such an amazing designer like Marc Jacobs and realizing that you can become friends with them.
DAMAN: Moving to the present, what are some of the most recent highlights of your modelling career? And what is the biggest project you are involved with right now?
Florin Sopcu: The present is here and I’m feeling strong. I travel a lot and about to launch a major campaign for of the most important leather brand in the world. Asia has been always a place where I feel at home and I’ll be working with Lexus for their campaign in Japan as well as some work for UNIQLO and Yohji Yamamoto.
DAMAN: What do you think do all those brands—from Louis Vuitton and Dolce&Gabbana to Moncler and Paul Smith—see in you?
Florin Sopcu: I would say that they see that I am a reliable model, hardworking but always keeping it fun. Imagine that you have to spend long hours with people you never met before, so keeping it light and fun characterizes me as a model. For me, being a model represents who I am and I like being a team player, it makes me feel like I’m a part of a family. One job, one walk, one campaign equals a family on the spot.
DAMAN: Now, of course, you’re also known for bringing your considerable experience to your own modelling agency. How is Dejavu Models Management doing?
Florin Sopcu: Dejavu Management is my old dream. They say time flies by when you’re having fun, and in my career, I’ve had my share of fun and still do. Now is the time for me to share my experiences, discover new faces and portray everything I learned into making new international models, both male and female models. Managing an agency while still working as a model is challenging. I want to be a role model in everything that I do, but my hectic schedule gets in the way sometimes.
DAMAN: What was it that motivated you to create your own agency?
Florin Sopcu: That I can be an inspiration for them. I try to teach as well as learn how the new generations react to any situation in life. I try to inspire them by teaching them to never give up, that the fashion industry is not an easy one and that hard work pays if you’re patient even you’re rejected many times. I try to make them strong and make them believe that success comes once you fight for it.
DAMAN: Today, what do you enjoy the most about running Dejavu?
Florin Sopcu: I get to see my models walking for big brands such as Prada, Gucci, Dior and LV among others. The price of seeing their faces getting all emotional after they book their first big show is really amazing and this makes me realize how hard and emotional it is when you first leave your country, family and friends for the first time.
DAMAN: What is your number one piece of advice for aspiring models?
Florin Sopcu: My advice is always staying true; don’t think about the money because that will come! Always learn and live each job as a life experience.
DAMAN: All in all, what would you say are the qualities that make a good model in this day and age?
Florin Sopcu: The younger generations are hungry and very well connected to what is happening in the world due to social media. The new generation of models are adopting the trend of well-being, of living the moment and learning. One of the qualities I would say that makes a good model nowadays is the finding of balance between real life and the life lived in social media, which can make you or sometimes harm you. Personality and commitment can make the difference.
DAMAN: Looking forward, what else do you want to accomplish?
Florin Sopcu: To conquer other market. I believe it’s a good moment for me to step into the American market, I see myself as a model with a more masculine look nowadays and this can be a good opening for me. So, why not?
DAMAN: What is it that motivates you to do what you do and drives you to reach out for new goals?
Florin Sopcu: My family is the engine that keeps me going and motivates me to reach new goal and face new challenges.
DAMAN: And how do you usually dress when you’re not on a runway, on a set or when attending events?
FS: Depend on the mood and the type of event, but I’m a very comfortable guy. I don’t look as a model most of the time and that makes me feel normal, if normal exists.
