The capsule collection is motivated by the exchange between French luxury and American sports in the eyes of Virgil Abloh.
As part of its Spring/Summer 2021 Precollection, Louis Vuitton launches LVxNBA, the first menswear capsule collection in a three-year partnership with the National Basketball Association under the artistic direction of Virgil Abloh. The collection is based on the idea of a player’s wardrobe and captures three main dress codes: Travels and transits are embodied in a grey cashmere tracksuit adorned with graphics informed by the lines of a basketball; game arrivals manifest in a blue hooded leather jacket, Monogram jeans and T-shirts; and the press conference dress code is expressed in suits and a dress shirt.
The definite highlight of the collection is the visual identity of the iconic NBA logo that blends into existing Louis Vuitton motifs. The NBA logo is made into an infinite houndstooth pattern used in tailoring, shirting and a tie, and also appears on a varsity jacket featuring the initials LV on the back.
The LV X NBA collection also sees the classic Keepall sports netted side details like a basketball hoop, the Christopher backpack, Nil messenger in vivid accents in the tri-colours of the NBA logo. For the footwear, there are chunky-soled leather derbies, slip-ons, and in lace-up leather boots fused with components from existing sneakers, each recognizable by the new LVxNBA emblem embossed on the foot-bed.
