Before you notice the badge on the hood, the shape of the car or the number on its doors, you notice the colors. Gulf’s unmistakable blue and orange have occupied a singular place in motorsport for more than half a century, transcending the race cars they once adorned to become one of the sport’s most enduring visual signatures.
More than 50 years later, those same colors continue to command attention, forming the visual foundation of the new TAG Heuer Formula 1 Automatic Chronograph x Gulf. The latest collaboration between the Swiss watchmaker and the iconic lubricant brand does more than reference a famous racing livery. It distills decades of motorsport history into a contemporary mechanical chronograph that feels equally at home on the wrist as it does in the paddock.
The story behind those colors is inseparable from endurance racing’s golden age. Introduced on the cars fielded by John Wyer Automotive Engineering in the late 1960s, Gulf’s powder blue and vivid orange became synonymous with legendary machines including the Ford GT40 and Porsche 917. Their fame soon extended well beyond the circuit after Steve McQueen’s 1971 film “Le Mans,” where the distinctive livery became an enduring symbol of speed, determination and mechanical excellence. Few racing liveries have achieved the same cultural longevity.

TAG Heuer’s place in that narrative feels equally natural. Long before today’s Formula One partnerships and sponsorships, the brand had already established itself as one of motorsport’s foremost names in precision timing. When the Formula 1 collection debuted in 1986, it marked a new chapter for the company, introducing a younger and more accessible interpretation of its racing heritage. Over the decades, the collection has evolved, embracing increasingly sophisticated materials and mechanical movements while remaining rooted in the competitive spirit that inspired its name.
The TAG Heuer Formula 1 Automatic Chronograph x Gulf continues that evolution with confidence. Rather than relying on nostalgia alone, it uses Gulf’s iconic palette to shape an assertive and thoroughly modern design. A black opaline dial provides contrast for the vertical blue and orange stripes that define the watch, while a matching blue outer track frames the dial. Three black chronograph counters preserve visual balance without interrupting the composition and colored hands subtly reinforce the racing-inspired theme. Skeletonized hour and minute hands complete the instrument-like appearance while improving legibility.
The racing references continue throughout the watch’s construction. Measuring 44mm, the sandblasted Grade 2 titanium case delivers substantial wrist presence without unnecessary weight, while the forged carbon tachymeter bezel introduces a material more commonly associated with contemporary race cars than traditional watchmaking. Because of carbon’s naturally irregular structure, each bezel carries its own unique pattern. An orange accent positioned beneath the bezel offers another understated nod to Gulf’s unmistakable colors.
Smaller details reflect the same attention to detail. Black DLC-coated pushers complement the technical character of the chronograph, while the screw-down crown features an orange lacquer detail inspired by the brightly colored controls found in competition cars. Turn the watch over and a titanium caseback engraved with the Gulf logo reinforces the collaboration without overwhelming the design. Limited to 1,000 pieces worldwide, the watch strikes a balance between exclusivity and authenticity, avoiding the temptation to overstate its commemorative credentials.

Power comes from TAG Heuer’s Caliber 16 automatic chronograph movement, a proven mechanism chosen as much for its reliability as its performance. Combined with 200 meters of water resistance and a matching sandblasted titanium bracelet, the Formula 1 Automatic Chronograph x Gulf is built for everyday wear rather than occasional admiration inside a display case.
Its greatest strength, however, lies beyond its specifications. Motorsport has always produced objects that outlive the races themselves, whether they are helmets, steering wheels or liveries that become emblematic of an era. Gulf’s blue and orange sit firmly among them, evolving from corporate branding into a visual language recognized by enthusiasts across generations.
That is what makes this latest collaboration so compelling. Younger collectors may know the colors through vintage race footage, automotive culture or social media long before they discover the history behind Le Mans. Others will remember that era firsthand, recalling the machines that transformed Gulf’s livery into legend. Either way, the connection remains immediate.
