Two opportunistic college students who always wanted to have their own barbershop, Aryo and Risky set up Manhattan Barbershop (MHB) in April 2013 as part of their business school coursework. Offering dapper cuts and a traditional straight-razor shaving service, MHB believes in doing things the old-fashioned way.
Guys, how did MHB come about?
Well, essentially we established MHB in April 2013 as part of our business degree. While other students were setting up short-term businesses just to get them through the course, we wanted to start something with a future, an establishment that would be around for a long time. We saw the opportunity to establish a new barbershop concept, one offering ambience, hygiene and a style service for young professionals. In seeking to do this, MHB was born.
What is the inspiration behind MHB? 
As indicated by the name of our shop, we are inspired by the people of Manhattan. It is a city of modern and clean young professionals who have their own individual sense of style. This suits our target market of Indonesians who have the same qualities and who take pride in their appearance.
Quite a few other barbershops have sprung up since you opened, do you view them as competition?
Yes, it is true that lots of other barbershops magically appeared after we did! But many have informed us that we inspired them to start, which is a positive thing. While there isn’t a strong feeling of competition, it inevitably makes us want to keep providing a higher level of service for our customers. There are also things that set us apart, such as our unique collaborations with respected homegrown Indonesian brands like Elhaus.
Do you think Indonesian men are taking their grooming routines more seriously?
Yes, absolutely. These days there is more pressure for men to look after their appearance and many more grooming products on the market. In Indonesia not many places offer a professional shaving service, which is the basic function of a barbershop, so we’re very happy to offer this, which is proving popular.
Finally, can you define “dapper” for us?
A neat, clean, stylish cut. That’s it!
