Back in 1972, Swiss watch manufacturer Audemars Piguet unveiled what would become a timeless icon of haute horlogerie: the Royal Oak. Two decades later, in 1993, the design took on a sportier identity in the Royal Oak Offshore. Fast forward to this year and, to celebrate the collection’s 30th anniversary, Audemars Piguet has introduced a stunning new reference, the Royal Oak Offshore Selfwinding Chronograph in 43mm.
<h2>Black With a Dash of Gold</h2>
The major defining feature of this new reference is its two-tone design which combines black ceramic with yellow gold. The case is crafted in black ceramic featuring polished chamfers juxtaposed with satin-brushed surfaces. It’s also interesting to note that the creation of the black ceramic case includes a complex manufacturing process, refined hand-finishing techniques and a proprietary ceramic composition that remains a closely guarded secret.
In addition, this 43mm Royal Oak Offshore Selfwinding Chronograph features the collection’s latest ergonomic case design, with highlights including large polished chamfers on the edges and a slight curve to the bezel along with the screw-locked crown and chronograph pushers. In particular, the ceramic bezel gently arcs from 6 to 12 o’clock in a way that perfectly matches the profile of the sapphire crystal.

This black case becomes the perfect canvas for elements in yellow gold. The pusher guards, studs and buckle are fashioned from this precious metal, and they subtly stand out against the darker hue of the case. This play of contrasts becomes even more notable on the dial. For this new reference, Audemars Piguet has created a two-tone dial design highlighting various textures, depths and lines. Forming the foundation of the dial is a black Méga Tapisserie pattern. On top of this canvas, we find an applied AP monogram in polished gold at 12 o’clock. The chronograph counters, in black with white and gold elements, occupy the traditional 3, 6 and 9 o’clock positions.
On top of these dial elements the Royal Oak hands stand out in yellow gold while the hour markers continue the two-tone motif with a combination of yellow gold and black lacquer. And framing the dial is a black minute track set against a golden background alongside a white tachymeter scale along the black inner bezel.
Rounding-up the design of the new watch is a black alligator leather strap with gold stitching and a yellow gold pin buckle. The watch also comes with an additional black rubber strap, and with Audemars Piguet’s interchangeable strap system which means that switching between these two requires no specialized tools or training.
<h2>The Beating Heart</h2>
The 43mm Royal Oak Offshore Selfwinding Chronograph is powered by an automatic chronograph movement, the Calibre 4401. This is no ordinary chronograph, however, as the Calibre 4401 features what is known as a retour-en-vol or flyback chronograph. With a regular chronograph, whenever the wearer wishes to time a new event, they must first stop, reset and then start the chronograph again. With a flyback chronograph, you simply start, stop and reset the chronograph using one simple action.

Moreover, operating the chronograph function on this new Royal Oak Offshore feels impressively smooth. The pushers feel smooth when pressed and you won’t feel the jolt of the hands jumping when the chronograph is started or stopped. The counter hands also reset to zero instantaneously thanks to a patented zero resetting mechanism.
On a more aesthetic note, the Calibre 4401 is adorned with various decorative finishes. These include the Côtes de Genève or Geneva stripes, circular graining, circular satin-finishing and polished bezels. The sapphire caseback of the watch gives the wearer a clear view of these final touches and the working of the movement.
With its impressive combination of aesthetics and workmanship, this new 43mm Royal Oak Offshore Selfwinding Chronograph would certainly be a fitting choice for individuals with an eye for quality timepieces. At the same time, the reference adds an important milestone in the history of a much-beloved collection.
