Sex in movies can add an interesting twist to the plot, but these erotic selections go out of their way to break conventional sexual norms.
NYMPHOMANIAC I AND II
Stars Charlotte Gainsbourg, Stellan Skarsgård, Stacy Martin, Shia LaBeouf
Director Lars von Trier
Highly anticipated for both its stellar cast and graphic scenes, “Nymphomaniac” might sound like a straight porno to some. That could easily have been the case—except that most of the sex scenes involve un-simulated sexual acts that will leave you, well, unstimulated. After the opening scene where Joe (Charlotte Gainsbourg) is severely wounded and found helplessly lying on a street by a stranger named Seligman (Stellan Skarsgård), the story proceeds to Joe sharing her life experiences as a sex addict to Seligman. What’s intriguing is that Joe’s sexual encounters are mostly unattached and emotionless, although a man named Jerôme (Shia LaBeouf) managed to leave a lasting impression on her. The four-hour-long movie has all the elements to make the audience uncomfortable, including depression and graphic depiction of sadomasochism. Due to its immense running time, the movie is divided into two equally beguiling yet thrilling series.
QUILLS
Stars Geoffrey Rush, Kate Winslet, Joaquin Phoenix, Michael Caine
Director Philip Kaufman
Marquis de Sade is a scandalous writer, aristocrat and philosopher, widely known for his libertine approach to sex. The word “sadism” is actually derived from his name. Drawing from his final years as an inmate in an asylum at Charenton, “Quills” narrates Sade’s impulsive, orderline writing routine and his struggle to get his highly controversial works published.
EYES WIDE SHUT
Stars Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman, Todd Field, Sydney Pollack
Director Stanley Kubrick
Loosely based on a novella titled “Dream Story,” this erotic thriller follows a sexually-fueled adventure of Dr. Bill Harford (Tom Cruise) who has just discovered that his wife (Nicole Kidman) intended to cheat on him. From prostitution to an orgy in one night, this movie is a definite must-watch, especially since this is Stanley Kubrick’s final film.
ORIGINAL SIN
Stars Antonio Banderas, Angelina Jolie, Thomas Jane
Director Michael Cristofer
After ordering a wife from America, wealthy Cuban businessman Luis Vargas (Antonio Banderas) has his whole life turned into a series of deceits and near death experiences as he falls head over heels in love with his new wife, Julia Russell (Angelina Jolie).
