Cartier unveils the latest Tank à Guichets, a showcase of horological expertise, contrasting finishes and a new invitation to read time differently

The Cartier Tank à Guichets was never intended to be a mere timekeeper. When it first launched in 1928, the watch combined technology and design to present time in an entirely new way—through two minimalist apertures that offered a digital display, elegant in its restraint.
“Six years after the debut of the Tank Louis Cartier, Louis Cartier took his pursuit of simplicity even further with the Tank à Guichets. Time is revealed solely through two minimal openings with the traditional dial replaced by a streamlined all-gold case defined by clean lines and perfect proportions. A jumping hour mechanism and a dragging minute display embody Cartier’s commitment to refined watchmaking where technical mastery always serves aesthetic excellence,” says Pierre Rainero, Cartier’s Director of Image, Style and Heritage.
Throughout the 1930s, Cartier introduced several distinct Tank à Guichets models, each unique in its execution. Variations appeared in the shape of the apertures, the integration of the brancards with the case, the positioning of the crown and the choice of materials. In 1997, to mark the brand’s 150th anniversary, Cartier released a platinum edition limited to 150 pieces. In 2005, the watch returned as part of the Collection Privée Cartier Paris in a rose gold version limited to 100 examples.
This year, following in the footsteps of the Tonneau, Tank Normale and Tortue, Cartier Privé—the Maison’s collectors’ line cherished by watch enthusiasts—reintroduces the Tank à Guichets with a fresh perspective. The new edition revives one of Cartier’s most avant-garde creations, expressed through two distinctive interpretations.

The first model, offered in yellow gold, rose gold or platinum, is a contemporary reimagining of the 1928 design. The digital display remains resolutely modern yet classically faithful, featuring an hour aperture at 12 o’clock and a minute aperture at 6 o’clock.
The second model, available only in platinum and numbered in a series of 200, recalls the daring spirit of the 1930s. Its apertures are set on an angle, a subtle nod to an era defined by experimentation and artistic flourish.
In both versions, the case becomes a canvas for contrasts: satin-brushed surfaces juxtapose with polished horizontal brancards, emphasizing the Tank’s iconic profile while lending a contemporary depth. The central dial carries a refined brushed finish, allowing the guichets—French for “windows”—to command attention.
