Debuting last season, the upscale line of Topman showcases the new collection through a series of short films, featuring filmmaker Dexter Navy among others
Not to discredit Dexter Navy’s fame, most people outside the music industry might not have a single clue as who this guy really is. But thrown in A$AP Rocky, M.I.A. and Theophilous London, somehow that name rings a bell.
The 25-year-old Brit is currently one of the hottest filmmakers today. His close rapport with some of the hip-hop industry’s biggest names, including Kanye West, of course, has given him the platform to showcase his own style of filmmaking that’s, simply put, a little out there.
“I like to collaborate with artists that wouldn’t be afraid to jump on a flight and shoot in the middle of nowhere,” he starts off, “I think film should take you somewhere that you thought could never exist. A place you think you know, but where you’re thrown in the opposite direction.”
That sentiment rings true with what is going on in fashion. And Topman did Dexter Navy justice by featuring him as the first among well-chosen tastemakers for the Topman Premium line’s fall/winter short films. The over-a-minute video titled “Private Views” follows Navy as he took a road trip through Westbourne Grove in west London, the place where he grew up.
Throughout the scenes, Navy wore the latest offerings from Topman Premium that comprises minimalist luxe sportswear basics. From T-shirts, slim-fit pants to sweatshirts, the collection very much leans toward a soft, pale palette and also nude tones. This line also highlights quality fabrics and essential styles, less of edgy high-street trends, one could alternatively say—which is quite the opposite to where major brands are progressing these days.
