SEEKING SUNLIGHT. DA MAN catches up with Australia’s male top model Mitchell Wick as his pursuit of happiness leads him to sunny Los Angeles
Being Australian, Mitchell Wick is more than familiar with sunlight and hot weather. No wonder then that he seemed to feel right at home during the shooting for DA MAN’s “It’s Always Sunny in Bali” editorial, shot by Ronald Liem in—as the fashion spread’s title suggests—always-sunny Bali.
Then again, Mitchell is always a natural when he steps in front of the camera; it certainly loves him as much as his adoring fans on Instagram and Snapchat.
While he’s already had Sydney and Bali in his grasp, by the beginning of 2016, Mitchell is set to shine in another sunny town: Los Angeles.
DA MAN: Hi, Mitchell! What have you been doing since we last saw you in Jakarta for Plaza Indonesia Men’s Fashion Week 2015 in September?
Mitchell Wick: I’ve been enjoying the nice warm weather here in Sydney. When I’m not at the beach, I’m working well and also taking up acting lessons, which is really exciting and I’m having a lot of fun with that.
“My mind is full of excitement, energy and happiness as I’m about to start a new chapter in my life and career”
DA MAN: We remember there were some fans of yours patiently waiting for you at the Fashion Week to give you a present. Did you expect to meet such loyal supporters here in Jakarta?
Mitchell Wick: I was totally blown away by the amount of fans who came to see me at the show. It was so great to see that I have loyal fans out there in places like Indonesia. I just hope that I made their night more enjoyable by meeting and taking photos with them.
DA MAN: Can we talk about your shoot in Bali with Ronald Liem? What was it like for you?
Mitchell Wick: The shoot with Ronald in Bali was so much fun! He is such a great guy to be around and work with, and I love the shots we got too. I’m already asking him when the next shoot is coming up! [Laughs]
DA MAN: So tell us about your move to Los Angeles. Is it temporary or more permanent? What’s the plan so far?
Mitchell Wick: Yes, I’m off to L.A. at the end of December; I already have my work visa, actually. I’m hoping to base myself there, but I’ll just have to see how things work out while I’m there. I have plans to travel and work in all markets over the world. I have the travel bug!
DA MAN: What made you decide to move to LA? Was it an easy or a hard decision?
Mitchell Wick: Well, I was first scouted to become a model while on holidays in the U.S., walking out of a music festival in Miami, which was quite a shock. I have a really good agency (NEXT Model Management) that’s sponsoring my move there and I believe it’s the next step in furthering my career, so it’s an easy decision for me to make the move.
DA MAN: When you’re away, what will you miss the most about Sydney and Australia in general?
Mitchell Wick: Definitely my friends and family will be what I miss most. I have a really close family, which means a lot to me, so they will be truly missed, but it gives them a great excuse for a holiday to the U.S. [Smiles]
DA MAN: Can you tell us about the campaigns you are in currently?
Mitchell Wick: I’ve just shot the latest Mavi Jeans campaign here in Australia. Also back again with Teamm8 to shoot their latest campaign as well.
DA MAN: Do you have any other projects besides modeling?
Mitchell Wick: As I mentioned before, I’ve started acting classes now and really want to push on with that. I’m also doing some DJ-ing, which I’d like to do alongside my modeling work when traveling.
DA MAN: It’s the holiday season. What do you usually do during the holidays?
Mitchell Wick: Holidays in Australia usually means I’m either at the beach, being with family or catching up with friends.
DA MAN: Last question! What is your current state of mind?
Mitchell Wick: My current state of mind … well, right now my mind is full of excitement, energy and happiness, as I’m about to start a new chapter in my life and career. Can’t wait to see where it takes me!
