Are Harnesses the New Menswear Trend?

Trends do come and go throughout the year, but lately, there has been one certain fashion item that never missed an award show. Timothee Chalamet wore it, Michael B. Jordan wore it, and so did Chadwick Boseman. It is the one and only, harness.

It all started back in July 2018, when Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman attended the ESPY awards in a white leather harness over his cream tuxedo. Several months later, Timothee Chalamet showed up at the Golden Globes wearing a shimmery black harness. And then later on, fellow Black Panther star Michael B. Jordan also showed up at the Screen Actors Guild Awards wearing one, in floral pattern.

Not to mention, none of the harnesses these actors wore, were listed as a harness. All three harnesses came from French fashion house Louis Vuitton, and the one Timmy wore was called ‘an embroidered bib’, and Jordan’s harness was called ‘an embroidered mid-layer’.

After these three men walked the red carpet in harnesses, created buzzes that made people start to wonder, “Is this the new menswear trend?”, rapper and Kylie Jenner’s baby daddy Travis Scott made it clear that a harness is the new menswear trend in 2019.

He posted a picture on his Instagram page, wearing an outfit with a harness layered on top.

After we take a good walk down the memory lane, turns out last year’s Oscars was the first witness of the accessory. At Oscars 2018, Olympic figure skater Adam Rippon walked the red carpet in a bondage-inspired harness underneath his suit.

It might still be a little confusing now to match the bib, harness, or however you prefer to refer it with; but this year’s series of fashion weeks came as our guide on how to style the accessory and how to mix them with our outfit.

And if you want to join the club, the harness is now available in stores for $2,530.
