Finally, a glimpse into the life of the enigmatic Martin Margiela
Martin Margiela is one of the most mysterious designers in the fashion industry. Through the soon-to-be launched documentary “Martin Margiela; In His Own Words,” we’ll witness a rare glimpse into his life. The Belgian-born designer has never given any sit-down interviews, released any official photos and even in press statements, he refers the house as “we.” As one of the most revolutionary fashion designers in the industry, he lets his work speak for itself while diverting attention away from himself.
The documentary was filmed one decade after his departure from his own label and showsthe designer talking about his 20-year career, inspiration and childhood. The trailer of the film peeks into some of the most defining moments of Margiela’s career, including the introduction of the veiled model, using ice to change the color of garments and the infamous Tabi boot. In the full-length documentary, Margiela himself provides the self-commentary and explains why he has chosen to remain anonymous for all these years. “I made this decision to protect myself; I could give more if I was protected.”
Directed by Reiner Holzemer, the documentary also features interviews withMargiela’s former mentor Jean Paul Gaultier, fashion historian Olivier Saillard and Carine Roitfield. “Martin Margiela; In His Own Words” will start streaming this Friday (April 9, 2020).
