This year, Officine Panerai expands the legacy of its Luminor Marina collection with a number of exciting new references, including the vibrant Luminor Marina Panerai Goldtech PAM01112.
Besides enjoying a solid reputation as a reliable and instantly-recognizable design, the Luminor Marina collection by Officine Panerai also boasts a rich history steeped in tradition and punctuated by contemporary successes. This story stretches back to the start of the 20th century, when the watchmaker was commissioned by the Regia Maria—the Royal Italian Navy of the time—to supply high precision timekeeping instruments. This chapter would then lead to the invention of a new luminous substance named the Luminor and gave birth to the distinctive design of the Luminor watch.
Then, in 1992, Panerai took the decisive step of entering the commercial watch market, introducing the Luminor to collectors and watch enthusiasts from all over the globe. The watch even had its own silver screen moment when Sylvester Stallone was seen wearing a Panerai Luminor 5218-201/a in the 1996 action thriller “Daylight.” The sturdy watch certainly radiated a confidence that matched Stallone’s bravado.
Since then, the Luminor’s journey has continued on an upward trajectory, introducing special editions and variants with high-end complications, as well as unique sub-collections that would forge their own stories. One such sub-collection is the Panerai Luminor Marina, which distinguishes itself with its hallmark small seconds sub-dial at the 9 o’clock position.
Last September, at the 2023 edition of Watches and Wonders Shanghai, Officine Panerai shone the spotlight on two of its iconic Luminor references: the Luminor Marina PAM01312 and Luminor Marina Panerai Goldtech PAM01112. And our story today will bring us closer to the latter.
As its name implies, the PAM01112 reference is set in a 44mm case made of brushed Panerai Goldtech, a proprietary gold alloy featuring a combination of platinum and copper which creates an intense red tint. The bezel comes in brushed Panerai Goldtech, while the iconic Safety Lock crown protection device, lever and crown are crafted in satin Panerai Goldtech. While subtle, the play of textures adds depth to the watch’s design.
“This vibrant case sits in beautiful contrast against the blue sunbrushed—or satiné soleil—sandwich dial”
This vibrant case sits in beautiful contrast against the blue sun-brushed—or satiné soleil—sandwich dial. Naturally, the dial features Arabic numerals and indices filled with white Super-LumiNova to ensure superior legibility even in low-light conditions. A date window occupies the 3 o’clock position, while the Luminor Marina’s signature small seconds sub-dial sits at its customary 9 o’clock position. The intricate workings of the dial are set under a sapphire crystal obtained from corundum, which is famously scratch resistant.
On the flip side, the caseback of the Luminor Marina Panerai Goldtech PAM01112 features a sapphire glass window that showcases the exquisite details of the P.9010 Calibre automatic mechanical movement. This particular movement integrates a Glucydur balance wheel which is resistant to temperature changes and physical shock, along with an Incabloc anti-shock device for even better reliability. And in terms of convenience, the P.9010 Calibre has a solid power reserve of three days.
Completing the Luminor Marina Panerai Goldtech PAM01112 is a blue alligator leather strap enhanced with beige detailing. The overall effect of the strap’s play of contrasts perfectly matches the color scheme of the dial, while the Panerai Goldtech trapezoid buckle perfectly echoes the gleam of the case. For a sportier look, there’s also an optional blue rubber strap provided.
All of these elements coalesce into a highly-recognizable timepiece that, at the same time, showcases Panerai’s heritage, versatility and expertise in haute horlogerie. And with its refined yet sporty attitude, as well as its subtle play of contrasts between colors and textures, the Luminor Marina Panerai Goldtech PAM01112 presents the perfect companion for cosmopolitan adventurers.
