Young and talented, Under Armour brand ambassador Daffa Wardhana shares insights about his career, recent projects and unwavering passion for sports
Daffa Wardhana has made quite a name for himself in the Indonesian film scene, even though he’s only been in the spotlight for a couple of years. A martial arts enthusiast with a particular love for jiu-jitsu, Wardhana brings physical and emotional intensity to his performances, whether it’s in action, drama or horror flicks. His commitment to his craft is also evident in the significant transformations he undergoes to authentically portray his characters. Additionally, his recent foray into TEDx talks highlights his dedication to using cinema as a platform to raise awareness about important social issues.

Daffa Wardhana: I’ve just wrapped up shooting for a film this May. This year, three of my films have been released in cinemas. One of them, “Ancika: Dia yang Bersamaku 1995,” was a box office success. Then there’s “Pemukiman Setan” and “Menjelang Ajal.” There’s the upcoming “Lembayung,” and possibly “Hantu Pamburu.”

DA: When we last talked with you back in 2022, you expressed a desire to become more involved in the film industry and use it as a platform to discuss social issues. Have you achieved your aspirations? 
DW: This year, I spoke at the TEDxSPH Youth event for the first time. I discussed the concept of refreshing and rebounding as an actor and why I have faith in Indonesia’s film industry. This industry opens up so many job opportunities because it involves comprehensive collaboration between various art forms. I also continue to partner with the Sekolah Relawan charity, where I do volunteer work for their programs.

DA: You made your debut starring in drama films, but in 2023 you dived into horror. What led you to delve into this genre? 
DW: I actually wanted to do action. Horror has become a strong pop culture phenomenon in Indonesia over the past two years. We can’t deny the fact that horror contributes greatly to Indonesian cinema because it attracts a lot of viewers. Most of our box office hits are horror films, so production houses and producers are eager to make these kinds of film. And as an actor, I get more projects in this genre. Interestingly, horror has a wider range of subgenres now, including action horror, slashers and drama horror. And these days, horror films usually involve a lot of stunts and action to make the scenes more interesting. This is one of the reasons I decided to take on this genre.

And which character left the greatest impression on you? 
DW: There’s a lot of prep work when we are filming, such as building chemistry with the other actors, which usually helps during the reading sessions. In one of my recent films—“Pemukiman Setan,” which is also one of my most personal projects so far—I got to explore Javanese culture because my character is full-on Javanese. So, I talked with someone from Malang in East Java. I also went the extra mile by shaving my head to play a “bad boy” character. I also had tattoos that didn’t come off for a couple of months because the henna went deeper into skin. But, when the film finally aired, I was happy to be part of it.

DA: We learned that, besides acting, you’re really into fitness and exercising. What kind of sports do you like? And what are your personal fitness goals? 
DW: Essentially, I want to invest in myself and my future. I can inspire people through social media to exercise and get moving. It’s not about showing off who has the best body, but more about encouraging people to be healthy and avoid getting sick.

My favorite sport right now is running. I’m running my first marathon this year, the Berlin Marathon, where I’ll be wearing Under Armour. It’s one of the world’s big six marathons, so I’m excited to be involved. Hopefully, everything will go well and I can excel in the race. I’ve always enjoyed jiu-jitsu and other martial arts, too. Hopefully, I can participate in more film productions to showcase my jiu-jitsu knowledge and skills in the future.
DA: As an ambassador for Under Armour, what are your thoughts on the brand and how does the brand’s designs align with your personal style?  
DW: Before I was offered the brand ambassador position, I had already been using Under Armour a lot. So, I was very happy. Under Armour’s branding emphasizes freedom and style in working out. They have a fantastic fashion scene that doesn’t feel forced and it fits my character perfectly since I like to work out but also do it a bit stylishly.

DA: What do you see as the biggest strengths of Under Armour as a sportswear brand? 
DW: I like the materials they use, especially for the clothing. Material choice is the most important for me aspect because it supports my daily movements and keeps me comfortable. The cutouts are really cool and fit my body well. And yes, they have other stuff, too, not just clothes. There are bags, hats and shoes that I like.
