Tumi Fall/Winter 2018 Takes Us to Scandinavia

STATE OF THE ART – With Scandinavia as its inspiration, Tumi updates its classic travel pieces with new colors, patterns and fresh innovative features

Latitude collection

What do Scandinavian design and Tumi have in common? In short, it’s minimalism and functionality. Combine the two together and what you have are timeless and practical travel pieces that you’ll cherish for a long time. A worthy investment, if you will. And that is exactly what Tumi’s fall/winter 2018 collection is all about.

Taking the scenic vistas of Scandinavia as inspiration, Tumi’s fall/winter 2018 collection explores the relationship between the technical and the handcrafted. This season, a set of new colors, textures and tones are introduced. From updated camouflage patterns to classic modernized florals along with shifting contrasts and plays of texture, the new collection adds yet another dimension to Tumi’s already extensive range—most notably, where fashion and style are concerned. Of course, innovation shares the same spotlight, as the brand introduces new designs and features that help ensure functionality and longevity.

Tahoe: The Great Outdoors

Where to start? The backpacks within the Tahoe collection would definitley be a good opener to this story. For one, they are easily distinguished from Tumi’s other lines as being clearly designed for the outdoors. This fall, the Tahoe collection has been re-introduced with a digital tide print, inspired by the famous northern lights. “So what we thought was, ‘how do you take something from the northern lights and what would it look like if it were ran it through a digitizing filter?’” explained Victor Sanz, Tumi’s creative director, of the print. “it became this kind of optical effect, similar to the feeling that you’d get when you see the northern lights. It becomes a bit magical and keeps you intrigued.”

The newest incarnation of the Tahoe also adopted a lot of street and outdoor cues into its design, especially with the use of mixed materials (polyester and matte nylon) as well as utilitarian details (like the multiple frontzip pockets that provides quick-stash for small essentials). A number of styles within the Tahoe collection (namely the Rockwell, Lakeview, Westville and Forest Flap backpacks) also feature a dedicated waterproof rain cover. Furthermore, the Westville is completed with an elastic dual cord strap that can easily hold a jacket or yoga mat. The interior of all Tahoe pieces are also notably spacious, well-organized and comes with a separate compartment to hold a 15-inch laptop.

Alpha Bravo & Latitude: The Rugged Companion

For the Alpha Bravo range, think of it as the more utilitarian and resilient option, as the bags from this collection are crafted either from leather or the extremely—and we mean extremely—durable ballistic nylon, which is also used for bulletproof vests. Not to say that the Alpha Bravo bag is bulletproof, but you can pretty much get an idea of how tough it is. Alpha Bravo’s utilitarian edge is also felt through its modern military characteristics, like its standout gunmetal zippers.

This season, the Alpha Bravo is introduced in three seasonal prints: The gray and black charcoal restoration, the dominantly white arctic restoration and the reflective green tundra. The Alpha Bravo also comes in a new style, the Tyndall, featuring a zip-around top flap closure and one waterproof side pocket. Other lines within the Alpha Bravo range, like the Columbus and Newport utility pouch, meanwhile, are updated with added tweaks. In particular, it combines style and function by allowing the pouch to be worn in three different ways, either as a waist pack, a cross body bag or a nifty sling bag.

In the luggage department, the Latitude collection showcases the same spirit as the Alpha Bravo, setting itself apart as Tumi’s most durable lightweight hardside case. Due to the use of Self-Reinforced Poly-Propylene (SRPP Ballistic), a material that’s also used in bulletproof gear, the Latitude collection is both impact-resistant and lightweight. As a matter of fact, the outer shape of the luggage can actually bend and flex itself in response to any changes in its surroundings.

19 Degree: Sculptural Beauty

Finally, there are also the 19 Degree aluminum luggage pieces—Tumi’s more elegant and luxurious offerings. Born out of the idea of having a sculpture you can travel with, Tumi’s 19 Degree features a fluid-looking interior that is exceptionally striking from all angles. Its interior, too, has been embossed with a diamond pattern that complements its exterior. In line with the mood of fall, the Tumi 19 Degree collection has been enhanced with a romantic ember color. More magnificent and sumptuous, though, is the limited-edition fall foliage pattern, which uses a multi-color anodizing effect that perfectly harmonize with its wave-like exterior. All in all, it makes the Tumi 19 Degree luggage a much more personal and emotive travel accessory. And isn’t that a good testament to exceptional craftsmanship?
