Precision, performance and purposeful design define TUMI’s Alpha collection. In this conversation, Global Creative Director Victor Sanz reflects on the thinking behind its latest evolution.

First conceived as a system of luggage and business cases engineered for durability and efficiency, the line has evolved into what the brand describes as a “blueprint for modern movement,” shaped by the way people navigate increasingly fluid lifestyles. Anchored by signature FXT ballistic nylon and refined through details such as streamlined pocketing, silent magnetic closures and intuitive access points, Alpha is designed to remove friction from the journey, allowing travelers to move with clarity and control.
With its latest iteration—including the introduction of the Ultra Blue colorway and a global campaign featuring Lando Norris and Wei Daxun—the collection continues to explore the intersection of performance, precision and everyday practicality.
DAMAN: Lando Norris and Wei Daxun appear in the campaign. How do they embody the Alpha ethos? 
Victor Sanz: Lando and Wei represent two different expressions of performance, and Alpha sits right at the intersection of both. Lando brings precision, speed and the ability to perform under pressure. He pushes his gear the same way he pushes himself, and he expects it to keep up. Alpha is designed for that level of intensity and reliability.
Wei brings discipline, intention and refinement. His world is grounded but just as demanding, requiring performance that feels seamless, intelligent and elevated without being overstated. Together, they reflect the modern global traveler. They move between different environments, adapt constantly and expect their tools to support them in every moment. That mindset is at the core of Alpha; it’s why they make such natural partners for this chapter.

DA: What inspired the Ultra Blue colorway? 
VS: Ultra Blue is a nod to TUMI’s bold, forward-moving spirit. It’s confident without being loud, representing a controlled energy. When we first explored this color on Alpha silhouettes, the entire collection lifted.
For me, Ultra Blue is about momentum. It captures that feeling right before you move forward, when everything is focused and intentional. It stands out when you’re traveling and feels clear and confident on the move.
DA: What do you hope people feel when they carry the new Alpha? 
VS: Our customer is always at the center of everything we create. With this latest iteration of Alpha, the goal was simple: to give people confidence that everything they need is considered, so they can focus on what matters and perform at their best.
We want them to feel prepared for anything, whether it’s racing between meetings, navigating a last-minute gate change or tackling their daily commute. My hope is that when someone carries Alpha, their focus shifts away from the stress of the journey and toward the possibilities ahead.
DA: Alpha feels highly architectural—almost engineered like protective armor. What informed that design language? 
VS: When we set out to reimagine Alpha, we wanted to honor the design codes that define it while evolving them with more purpose and strength. The architectural quality comes from discipline: reconsidering every curve, questioning every norm and refining until the product feels inevitable.
The process was rooted in understanding ergonomics and human behavior—how people reach, retrieve and interact with their bags while in motion. We focused on attack angles, pocket architecture and construction techniques that remove unnecessary steps and create a seamless experience.

DA: Which hidden design detail of Alpha best represents your philosophy of performance-led design? 
VS: For me, it’s the details people may never talk about but immediately feel.
The magnetic puller that slides perfectly into its garage. The Tuckaway pocket that creates a smoother journey through security. The hidden organizational cues that guide your hand without needing instructions.
All of it is designed to work quietly in the background. That is performance-led design at its best—when everything does its job so seamlessly, you don’t have to think about it at all.
DA: How does the collection respond to today’s hybrid lifestyle, where work and travel often overlap? 
VS: One of the biggest shifts we’ve seen is that life just isn’t segmented anymore. You’re not only “at work” or “traveling”—you’re often doing both in the same day. That reality guided how we approached this next generation of Alpha. The collection is built to move fluidly between environments without ever feeling out of place. Whether you’re heading into a meeting, navigating an airport or moving through the city, Alpha supports that rhythm with solutions that are integrated, not added on.
For me, it’s about removing friction from the day. Thoughtful organization, purposeful compartments and performance materials work quietly in the background so you can stay focused on what you’re doing—not on what you’re carrying. That sense of control and ease defines modern luxury, and it’s exactly what Alpha is engineered to deliver.
