Performers at the Super Bowl’s halftime shows always appear extra-spectacular. For his appearance at Super Bowl LV, the Weeknd rocked his signature red Givenchy suit
Givenchy Creative Director Matthew M. Williams designed custom pieces especially for the superstar’s performance on the legendary halftime show. As one of the most-watched sports telecasts in the world, an estimated 100 million viewers tuned in on February 7 to see The Weeknd’s performance at the Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida. And of course, to see the NFL championship game between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Kansas City Chiefs.
Bringing his signature classic style to the 2021 Super Bowl halftime show performance, The Weeknd wore a red Givenchy suit jacket embroidered with crystals. On stage he performed a medley of his hits, including “Blinding Lights,” “Starboy” and “Earned It.” He was later joined on the football field by a large group of backup dancers dressed in similar red suits and face bandages.
On dressing the fashion-forward musical artist, Matthew Williams said: “It’s truly an honor to have dressed The Weeknd for his incredible Super Bowl show. To me, fashion is all about infusing what you wear with a unique personality, and The Weeknd brought his look to life with his energy, character, and sense of style.”
That look comprised two bespoke jackets: One was sharply constructed in red wool, while the savoir faire version was used for the finale. The latter was painstakingly embroidered with thousands of ruby crystals. It required four embroiderers and more than 250 hours to complete. This jacket was worn over a black cotton poplin shirt and wool trousers accessorized with a black leather tie, and gloves, as well as black and white derbies.
