To All Corners of the World – Swiss watch brand TAG Heuer introduces a new Carrera model for a new generation of adventurous travelers
Last year, TAG Heuer celebrated the 55th anniversary of its Carrera collection. Following the birth of the original Heuer Carrera back in 1963, the line has never ceased to delight—and also innovate through such groundbreaking models like the Connected Modular pieces.
Now, the celebration continues as the brand adds yet another avant-garde creation to this storied family of timepieces: A new TAG Heuer Carrera driven by a Heuer 02 manufacture movement and sporting a nifty GMT function.
A Nod to the Past
Naturally, the newly unveiled TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph GMT stays true to the design codes and DNA of the original Heuer Carrera. The name “Carrera,” was chosen by Jack Heuer himself in tribute to the Carrera Panamericana—at the time the most dangerous auto race in the world. But more than just capturing the excitement of the race, the Heuer Carrera became the watch of choice for generations of daring drivers—from those who enjoy speeding down open roads to those who simply like to cruise through daily life—by breaking the rules of watchmaking design as it was known at the time. It was, quite literally, a revolutionary timepiece.
Today, the Carrera “celebrates the speed demons, the risk-takers and the dreamers who race against time and never slow down.”
The design elements that made the Carrera an undisputable icon now lives on in the TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph GMT. For one, the watch sports the original “3-6-9” counter layout introduced in the 1963 model. The minutes and hours indicators for the chronograph are positioned at 3 and 9 o’clock, respectively, while the small seconds counter sits at 6 o ’clock. Also in line with the look of its storied predecessor is the date window at 4:30.
A Travel Companion
What’s definitely new on the TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph GMT is described by the last bit of the watch’s name. A favorite among avid travelers and passionate globetrotters, the GMT function adds a second time zone indicator that would allow the wearer to, at a glance, learn what time it is at home or at another destination. On this watch, the feature can be adjusted using the crown and is read using the red lacquered hand along with the black and blue ceramic bezel sporting a 24-hour GMT scale.
The aforementioned red GMT hand has been mounted in a secondary position between the hour and minute hands. This ingenious touch allows it to pass over the indexes and skim the GMT scale for improved legibility—which is only fitting as optimum readability has always been a hallmark of the Carrera family. So, rest assured that marking lap times while thundering along a circuit is as easy as telling the time back home while seated comfortably in an air liner.
Driving the Traveler
It wouldn’t be a Carrera if it didn’t meld function and fashion, and the TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph GMT shines in the latter as much as it excels in the former. Up front, the watch boasts a black skeleton dial, rhodium plated hands (which contrasts nicely with the red GMT hand) as well as rhodium-plated indexes. white Super-LumiNova further ensures optimum legibility during all conditions.
More importantly, the open design of the dial allows us to look directly into the heart of the watch: the Heuer 02 manufacture movement. encasing the movement and dial is a robust 45mm steel case, which is then fastened to the wrist of the wearer using either a steel bracelet or rubber strap.
Looking at the watch as a complete package, the TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph GMT certainly has a lot going on for it. From the nifty chronograph and GMT functions to the modern design that favors legibility up to the 75-hour power reserve that would be extremely useful during long journeys, this is definitely a watch for modern-day travelers of all sorts.
So, no matter if you’re looking to zoom from adventure to adventure or if you’re more into exploring the wonders of the world at leisure, TAG Heuer now has the perfect companion to accompany you to the furthest reaches of the world.
