SECOND TO NONE. The Macallan furthers its commitment to perfecting the whisky-making craftsmanship through a special collaboration with the Roca brothers
The Macallan Edition No. 2
Whisky making has been a perennial tradition in Scotland, and only a few names are still running the business now as how it was, almost a couple of century ago. Among those is The Macallan, the producer of Highland single malt Scotch whisky that distributes its renowned quality products around the world.
Quite recently, The Macallan celebrated the launch of Edition No. 2, a new limited edition coming from the house’s Edition series. Unlike an ordinary whisky that derives its taste and maturing process from one cask type, the Edition No. 2 makes use seven handpicked casks from four distinctive bodegas. Bob Dalgarno, The Macallan’s master whisky maker, headed the project with the Roca brothers, two culinary visionaries who have etched an indelible mark in the world’s cuisine with their El Celler de Can Roca restaurant (listed in the World’s Best 50 and awarded with three Michelin stars),
Bob Dalgarno first selected the European oak Tevasa casks himself, which impart a sensuous note of rich, dried fruit to the whisky. Joan Roca added in the American and European Diego Martin casks that subtly ooze flavors of toffee and green wood. His brother, Josep Roca, rounded that up with the European oak Jose Miguel Martin casks for allspice and ginger tastes. The other brother and pastry chef, Jordi Roca, gave final touches of citrus and light vanilla by choosing the American oak Vasyma butts and puncheons.
Being a rich and fine mix of casks, those seven choices also remain relevant to the Roca brothers’ origin since they are all taken straight from four Spanish bodegas (namely, once again, Tevasa, Diego Martin, Jose Miguel Martin and Vasyma). “By collaborating with the Roca brothers, we have combined our knowledge of whisky making with their creative culinary expertise. The result [is] a single malt that challenges expectations,” Dalgarno started off. To which, sommelier Josep Roca responded, “Our shared values and passions with The Macallan are taken a step further with our Edition No. 2. We are really proud of this partnership and the exceptional whisky created as a result.”
In the end, the Edition No. 2 showcases a warm, spicy and complex character nuanced by tasteful notes of apple, oranges, toffee, dried fruit and vanilla. The ABV level of 48.2 percent also promises a fuller flavor that should not only delight both whisky connoisseurs and budding enthusiasts, but also take them to the next level of epicurean indulgence.
