Combining historical reverence and cutting-edge design, the new TAG Heuer Carrera chronograph leaves a new mark in the Carrera collection’s legacy

The TAG Heuer Carrera counts itself among some of the most influential watch designs in history, having defined the chronograph genre for over 60 years after its debut in 1963. With 2023 marking the collection’s 60th anniversary, 2024 sees the addition of a new member of the family: a new TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph.
Naturally, the newest Carrera pays homage to an earlier design. In this case, the 7753 SN reference from the late &#8217;60s. While this series introduced many clever design touches that improved on the success of the first Heuer Carrera watches, the 7753 SN was best known for its famous “panda” layout with a silvered dial and black subdials, as well as the “reverse panda” where the colors were—obviously—reversed. In fact, the nomenclature SN meant silver and noir or black.
The Carrera Chronograph of 2024 takes the classic panda design and encases it in a contemporary Glassbox construction. Starting from the outside inward, we have the 39mm stainless-steel case topped with a sapphire crystal reminiscent of the Heuer Carrera models from the 1970s. Moving inward, we find a silver sunray-brushed dial with two black azuré subdials at 3 and 9 o’clock forming the signature bi-compax panda layout.

The rhodium-plated central hand features a red-lacquered tip, which makes it easy to see on top of the dial. Further touches of red are added on the subdial hands and marking each five second interval along the indexes. While subtle, these contrasting elements greatly enhances readability—which is what the Carrera is all about in the first place.
Of course, the new TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph has quite the “engine” driving it: the in-house chronograph movement Heuer 02 (Ref. TH20-00). This automatic movement features bi-directional winding, an impressive 80-hour power reserve and a new shield shaped oscillating weight that is visible through the transparent caseback.

As a final touch, the watch comes with a steel bracelet—a first for the collection, and certainly a welcome new addition to the Carrera lineup.
Interestingly, the TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph has also been made available as a watch face for the TAG Heuer Connected, further bridging the legacy of Jack Heuer’s singular vision with TAG Heuer’s avant-garde approach to watchmaking.
