Explore the poignant love story and enduring legacy of “Mar,” a musical drama inspired by the timeless songs of Ismail Marzuki and the resilience of a nation

The music of Ismail Marzuki is more than art—it’s a legacy that captures the soul of a nation. His songs, with their heartfelt lyrics and captivating melodies, have become enduring symbols of Indonesia’s cultural and historical identity. Inspired by the life and works of this iconic songwriter and composer, ArtSwara presents “Mar”—a musical drama that reimagines history through a tale of love, sacrifice and the unyielding human spirit.
Set against the backdrop of the Bandung Lautan Api tragedy and Indonesia’s fight for independence, “Mar” tells a deeply moving story. The narrative follows Sergeant Major Marzuki (Mar), a brave and devoted soldier, and Aryati, a compassionate nurse, as they navigate the challenges of war and the complexities of love.

Through the recollections of Nin, a character who bridges the past and present, the audience is transported to an era defined by resilience and sacrifice. Against the chaos of war, Mar and Aryati’s love story unfolds—a tender exploration of strength, vulnerability and devotion to both each other and their country.
“This musical drama began with a question: What inspired Ismail Marzuki to write such beautiful songs like ‘Rindu Lukisan,’ ‘Sabda Alam’ and ‘Aryati’? Was he in love?” said Maera Panigoro, Executive Producer of ArtSwara. “This curiosity sparked the idea to create a love story inspired by his music.”

Directed by Dian HP, the production’s vibrant harmonies are influenced by Glenn Miller’s jazz-era arrangements, evoking the spirit of Bandung Lautan Api. The story itself, conceptualized by Panigoro, has been expertly written by Titien Watimena and directed by Wawan Sofwan, weaving a rich tapestry of Indonesia’s cultural and historical heritage.

The cast delivers exceptional depth to the production. Gabriel Harvianto stars as Mar, with Galabby Thahira as Aryati, supported by Taufan Purbo Kusumo and Bima Zeno Pooroe. Harvianto’s preparation for the role involved delving into the history of the Bandung Lautan Api tragedy and researching the years leading up to the establishment of the Tentara Keamanan Rakyat (TKR). Drawing on his own familial ties—his late father also served in the army—he found it natural to embody Marzuki’s disciplined demeanor, speaking style and gestures.
“As a sergeant major, Marzuki is known for his discipline, diligence and assertiveness, though his interactions with women could be awkward,” Harvianto explained. “Meeting Aryati transforms him. He becomes more romantic and caring, while his patriotism remains steadfast.”
Panigoro hopes the production will inspire a younger generation to appreciate Ismail Marzuki’s contributions to Indonesian music. For those already familiar with his work, “Mar” offers an opportunity to rediscover his songs through fresh arrangements.
Ultimately, this production is more than a performance— it’s a heartfelt tribute to Indonesia’s rich cultural history and the power of music to tell stories that resonate across generations. “Mar” will run from February 26 to 28, 2025, at Ciputra Artpreneur in Jakarta.
