The adidas SS26 Island Series collection lands in Papua, blending classic Superstars with Bird-of-Paradise emblems, Asmat-inspired stripes, and T-shirts by Michael Yan Davis
The latest chapter in adidas’ Island Series takes the iconic Superstar to Papua, bringing the brand’s signature style into conversation with the region’s rich cultural heritage. For SS26, the classic trainer is reimagined in earthy cream and brown tones inspired by Papua’s landscapes, with fringe details nodding to local textile traditions. A striking Bird-of-Paradise emblem graces the heel—a revered symbol of honor and grace in Papuan culture—while stripes influenced by the visual language of the Asmat tribe further root the sneaker in its local identity.
The collection also extends beyond footwear. Two graphic T-shirts were created in collaboration with Papuan artist Michael Yan Davis, drawing on traditions such as the Yospan dance and Biak tribal mask beliefs, which both celebrate communal harmony and shared history. The artworks explore themes of community and cultural connection while reinforcing the collection’s narrative..
What makes this release particularly compelling is its focus on storytelling. adidas demonstrates how an international brand can honor local identity respectfully and contemporarily, collaborating with local creatives and weaving culturally significant elements into design. Initiatives like the Island Series have the potential to transcend fashion drops and evolve into global platforms that celebrate and promote heritage more widely.
