TAG Heuer&#8217;s illustrious history in watchmaking is marked by several iconic timepieces, including the Skipper, which debuted in 1968. Back then, the Skipper was seen on the wrists of professional and amateur sailors alike until production ceased in 1983. Now, exactly 40 years after its disappearance from the TAG Heuer catalogue, the Skipper is back, ready to make waves once again.
The new 2023 TAG Heuer Carrera Skipper inherits design elements from the recently re-designed Glassbox Carrera, introduced earlier in March. Its bezel-less case showcases a modern appearance while incorporating vintage-inspired typography and color scheme.

Aside from its appearance, the new Skipper also gets the Carrera’s robust yet elegant 39mm stainless-steel case. Inside, the self-winding TAG Heuer caliber TH20-06 powers the timepiece, boasting an impressive 80 hours of power reserve. Finally, the new enduring blue textile wrap is engineered for comfort and durability.
While it carries the spirit of its predecessor and shares some similarities with the original Skipper, this new watch is not a direct remake. The new Skipper retains its regatta-inspired look from the original model that was born from Jack Heuer’s involvement in the 1967 America’s Cup. The first-ever Skipper model was launched to celebrate the victory of “Intrepid,” the 12-meter vessel backed by the New York Yacht Club with Heuer as the official timing partner.

Staying true to the original Skipper, the watch features a circular brushed main dial in the signature Carrera blue, inspired by the color of the sea. The subdial at three o’clock displays the recognizable tri-color of Lagoon Green, Regatta Orange and Intrepid Teal for the 15-minute regatta counter. At the same time, the subdial at the nine o’clock showcases Intrepid Teal for the 12-hour counter.

Other notable features inspired by its predecessor are the triangle-shaped markers placed at five-minute intervals along the outer curved flange, a vibrant central seconds hand and the “Skipper” name integrated at the base of the 12-hour counter. The addition of a date window at six o&#8217;clock and an under-the-radar small-seconds display with alternating markers in white and orange enhances the practicality of the watch.
All in all, the original Skipper compelling history ultimately paved the way for the modern-day Carrera Skipper. And by this release, it also showcases TAG Heuer’s commitment to maintaining its brand identity and setting the stage for an exciting revival that pays homage to the past while embracing the future.
