How much time does greatness really take? For Shohei Ohtani, it is more than a philosophical question. Widely regarded as one of the defining athletes of his generation, the Japanese superstar has rewritten baseball’s modern playbook by thriving as both an elite pitcher and one of the sport’s most dangerous hitters, a feat many believed impossible in today’s game. Yet despite MVP awards, championships and countless records, Ohtani found himself asking a surprisingly simple question: How much more time do I have in my baseball career?
That reflection became the foundation of one of Seiko’s most remarkable mechanical creations.
Presented to commemorate Ohtani’s 10th year as a Seiko brand ambassador in Japan, the Seiko Star Time is a one-of-a-kind wristwatch developed over approximately three years through close collaboration between the athlete and the company’s engineers. It is neither a concept watch nor the start of a limited edition. Instead, the watch exists as a single piece, created exclusively for Ohtani.

Its premise is unlike anything else in contemporary watchmaking. Rather than adding another familiar complication, Seiko challenged itself to visualize the accumulation of time itself. The result is a mechanical display capable of recording up to one million cumulative hours, equivalent to more than 114 years. Instead of measuring only the present moment, the Star Time captures the passage of an entire lifetime and beyond, transforming elapsed hours into a lasting record of dedication.
Mechanically, that ambition demanded an equally unconventional solution. Replacing conventional hands are five rotating discs that display cumulative time across progressively larger intervals: 24 hours, 1,000 hours, 10,000 hours, 100,000 hours and one million hours. The central disc simultaneously serves as a traditional 24-hour display, allowing the watch to remain practical. At the same time, the remaining discs continue tracking the extraordinary span of time unfolding beneath it.

Building such a mechanism required far more than adapting an existing caliber. Because the stacked discs are substantially thicker than standard hands, Seiko developed an entirely new movement architecture, reconfigured the movement and established new assembly techniques through close cooperation between its design and manufacturing teams. The technical achievement lies not in mechanical spectacle, but in solving a problem few watchmakers have ever attempted.
The symbolism is equally considered. Inspired by the nearly imperceptible movement of stars across the night sky, each disc advances so gradually that its motion cannot be detected with the naked eye. Progress, the watch suggests, rarely announces itself. It reveals its significance only after years of steady effort. A diamond marks the completion of each disc’s rotation, while another sits at the center to represent the North Star, an unwavering destination toward which every journey is directed. The star motif continues across the titanium case, ceramic bezel and sapphire-topped crown, creating a visual language that extends beyond the dial itself.

Perhaps the Star Time’s greatest achievement is that it avoids becoming a novelty. Its million-hour display is impressive, but the underlying idea is what gives the watch lasting significance. Rather than asking how precisely a mechanical watch can measure minutes or seconds, Seiko asked whether it could express perseverance itself through mechanics.
In an industry where innovation often means refining familiar complications, the Star Time offers something rarer: an entirely new way of thinking about time on the wrist. It stands as both a personal tribute to Shohei Ohtani’s exceptional career and a reminder that some of the most compelling watches are not created for collectors or the marketplace, but simply to prove what watchmaking is still capable of achieving.
