Up close and personal with Reservoir’s inaugural aviation-themed chronograph-equipped timepiece: The Airfight Chronograph

Aviation has inspired watchmakers for decades, with the aesthetics of cockpit instruments and the degree of precision required for flight operations strongly resonating with the principles of timekeeping—to say nothing of the sense of adventure permeating the golden era of flight. French watch brand RESERVOIR channels this spirit through its Airfight collection; and this year, a chronograph joins the lineup.
<h2>TAKEOFF</h2>
RESERVOIR is known for its unique designs inspired by mechanical measuring instruments, spread across four universes, one of them being aeronautics as represented by the Airfight collection. These watches, in turn, are known for adopting the black tone of on-board flight instruments and a jumping-hour aperture at 6 o’clock. And earlier this year, the collection welcomed a new member to its ranks: the Airfight Chronograph.
At its core, the Airfight Chronograph is inspired by the legendary P-51 Mustang. One of the most famous warbirds from the World War II era, the North American P-51 Mustang was a veritable icon of military aviation. On a fundamental level, the plane distils the essence of form, function, performance and aesthetics that is central to both aviation and watchmaking.

Even at a glance, it’s clear that the Airfight Chronograph’s dial is full of details taken from its muse. For instance, the hours and minutes hands are rendered in black, with a large white luminous triangle at the tips of each, echoing the instrument panel of the P-51. Pilots and aviation history enthusiasts might also notice references to the “badin” airspeed indicator—named after Roul Édouard Badin, the French aeronautical engineer who invented the instrument.
And at the heart of the Arifight Chronograph is an instrument that has always been vital to aircraft operations: the chronograph. Whether it’s measuring elapsed flight time or marking off waypoints during navigation, the chronograph is an essential part of an airplane. And with that in mind, RESERVOIR crafted an easy-to-read dial layout with distinctive markings (color-coded green, orange and red in another nod to flight instruments) to avoid confusion. Furthermore, there’s a 30-minute counter at 12 o’clock, while the hour counter sits at 6 o’clock.

Completing the dial layout is RESERVOIR’s distinctive Bi-Retrograde display. The one on the left has markings from 0 to 30, indicating retrograde seconds, while the one on the right, which graduates from 1 to 31, indicates the date.
<h2>FLIGHT SPECS</h2>
The RESERVOIR Airfight Chronograph is presented in two case varieties, both measuring 43mm. The first option is stainless-steel, the second is black PVD with a brushed finish. Moving inwards we come to the bezel which, naturally, features a tachymeter scale. The watch is then topped with a domed anti-reflective sapphire crystal. This color scheme also continues to the leather and canvas strap as well as the additional NATO strap which comes with quick release spring bars for easy changing.

And there’s actually one more reference to the P-51 in the Airfight Chronograph’s design. The crown of the watch echoes the knurled knobs used for various switches in the aircraft’s cockpit.
Last but not least, the Airfight Chronograph is powered by the Calibre RSV-Bi120, an automatic movement developed in-house by RESERVOIR, featuring the aforementioned bi-retrograde chronograph complication and a power reserve of up to 60 hours.
