When DAMAN Caliber visited IWC Schaffhausen’s manufacturing center, the experience revealed not only how watches are made but how tradition and technology are intertwined in every detail. Nestled on the outskirts of Schaffhausen, Switzerland, where precision meets heritage, the facility is far more than a production hub. It’s a cathedral of horology where innovation, craftsmanship and sustainability coexist under one roof.
Inaugurated on August 27, 2018, to mark the brand’s 150th anniversary, this avant-garde manufacture stands as a powerful testament to both legacy and modern vision. It remains living proof of founder Florentine Ariosto Jones’ original philosophy: blending tradition with technological innovation.
The Magic of Old Town

Our journey to IWC Schaffhausen begins where it all started: within the venerable walls of its historic headquarters. Located in the heart of Old Town, this iconic building has stood proudly on the banks of the Rhine since 1875, its story woven into the fabric of Swiss watchmaking. While it once hummed with the activity of nearly 200 employees, today it houses the brand’s administrative and marketing teams. Crucially, the final meticulous assembly of every IWC timepiece is still performed here—a fitting tribute to its origins.
Anchoring this bridge between past and present is the ground-floor IWC Museum. Inaugurated in 1993 for the brand’s 125th anniversary, the museum offers visitors a captivating journey through the pioneering spirit that defines IWC’s legacy. Over 230 meticulously curated exhibits chart the brand’s evolution—from the foundational Jones calibers and the influential 52-caliber era to modern icons such as the Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar and collaborations with Porsche Design.
Yet the true soul of the collection lies in its archival treasures. Here, horological history breathes through original catalogs, period advertisements and two of the 94 surviving ledgers that meticulously record every watch produced since 1885—complete with its caliber, case material, recipient’s name and delivery date. This is where visitors can tangibly connect with the master artisans and their creations, immersing themselves in IWC’s extraordinary journey through time.

This striking 13,500-square-meter facility is a monumental statement of IWC’s evolution, seamlessly blending architectural audacity with technical mastery. From the moment one steps inside, the soaring nine-meter-high lobby leaves an immediate impression.
The architectural narrative unfolds in harmony with IWC’s DNA. The interplay of black-framed glass façades, brilliant white overhangs, warm wooden cores and crisp rooflines hints at the innovation within. A giant-scale perpetual calendar mechanism ticks quietly beside portraits of the brand’s legendary pioneers—a powerful prelude to the artistry that awaits beyond.

Conceived under the creative direction of CEO Christoph Grainger-Herr, the building reimagines what a manufacture can be: not merely a place of production but a living embodiment of the brand’s spirit. Inspired by the clean lines and functional grace of modernist exhibition pavilions, the Manufakturzentrum blurs the line between gallery, workshop and laboratory. It celebrates transparency and craftsmanship, standing as a modernist statement that reflects both the precision and poetry of fine watchmaking.
The Epicenter of Creation

At its core, IWC Schaffhausen’s Manufakturzentrum serves as the brand’s fully integrated epicenter of creation—where cases and movements are transformed, from start to finish, into the beating hearts of its watches. Within its pristine halls, more than 1,500 distinct components—ranging from foundational base plates and bridges to delicate latches for perpetual calendars and tourbillons—are produced with astounding precision.
A symphony of CNC machines and articulated robots hum methodically in the component workshop, showcasing cutting-edge efficiency. In the electroplating department, components receive their final sheen—rhodium or nickel coatings for protection, with gold accents applied to special engravings. Yet despite this technological prowess, the human hand remains the final arbiter of quality, ensuring each piece meets IWC’s uncompromising standards.
For instance, the final assembly of IWC’s in-house calibers—including the 52, 69 and 59 families—is carried out by hand within immaculate cleanrooms that resemble semiconductor laboratories more than traditional workshops. Here, master watchmakers, each a specialist in their craft, follow a modular workflow—a concept that echoes the visionary approach of founder F.A. Jones—to achieve absolute precision.
Meanwhile, in the lower levels of the Manufakturzentrum, the cases that house these intricate movements take shape. Whether stainless steel, precious metal or IWC’s proprietary Ceratanium—a hybrid of titanium’s lightness and ceramic’s durability—each case is milled, engraved and polished to perfection using advanced high-tech processes.
Ultimately, whether it’s a robotic arm feeding brass blanks or an artisan hand-polishing a tiny component, the Manufakturzentrum presents a breathtaking spectacle: a place where technological progress and human artistry coexist in perfect balance, bringing every IWC watch to life.

As we stepped out of IWC Schaffhausen’s Manufakturzentrum, we carried with us a deep appreciation for its horological ambition. This 42-million-Swiss-franc investment is more than just a facility—it’s a synchronized ecosystem. Each department—from Incoming Goods to Movement Assembly, Case Production to Quality Control—functions in flawless harmony.
Even the architecture mirrors this precision: 840 tons of steel support the structure while 2,200 square meters of solar panels crown its roof. Inside, the air is so meticulously filtered that it feels like breathing precision itself. The scale and subtlety of this place converge to form a true pinnacle of modern watchmaking—a testament to IWC’s relentless pursuit of perfection.
Yet beyond its technical marvels, it’s the enduring human touch that leaves the most lasting impression. Here, artisan and machine perform a carefully choreographed dance, transforming raw materials into future heirlooms. Every stage, from raw metal to finished movement, unfolds in a logical sequence guided by an integrated quality management system that safeguards excellence long before a timepiece reaches its final assembly in Old Town.
There’s a quiet poetry to the rhythm of this place—a harmony that transcends its technical achievements. Tradition here is not merely preserved but constantly reimagined, one caliber, one case, one component at a time. With the Rhine Falls shimmering in the distance, the Manufakturzentrum stands as more than a factory—it is the living bridge between IWC’s heritage of 1868 and its audacious, unwritten future.
