DAMAN secures a rare invitation to tour OMEGA’s Biel/Bienne facility, where 140-plus years of watchmaking heritage meet cutting-edge precision engineering, and where nothing leaves until it’s earned its place on your wrist.

The watch industry had barely caught its breath from Watches and Wonders Geneva 2026 before I found myself on Rue Jakob-Stampfli 96, a quiet street in Biel/Bienne, Switzerland, facing a building almost too beautiful to be a factory. Five floors of glass and warm Swiss spruce rose against a pale morning sky, the iconic OMEGA logo in red sitting atop it all like a period at the end of a very confident sentence. Standing at the threshold, I understood why OMEGA had commissioned Pritzker Prize-winning architect Shigeru Ban for this inner sanctum. This factory wasn’t just a place to build watches; it was a complete statement.
Same Address, New Century

The site’s history runs deep. Louis Brandt &amp; Fils first established their watch-manufacturing operations here in 1882, and the company the world knows today as OMEGA has remained at this address ever since. That continuity of place makes DA MAN’s exclusive invitation to tour the facility all the more resonant, offering a rare firsthand look at how the brand is shaping the future of watchmaking.
Put simply, it was a chance to see exactly how and where the brand brings its famous timepieces to life. In its entirety, the OMEGA Factory represents the industry’s most cutting-edge watch assembly, training and quality control facility. Conceived by Ban as an eco-friendly structure, it features a sophisticated indoor climate and energy strategy aimed at achieving optimal efficiency through sustainable development, and was built entirely from Swiss spruce and concrete.

The factory occupies five floors, fully optimized for watch assembly, testing, staff training and quality control. Stepping into the lobby, I was immediately struck by the architectural brilliance of the space. The atmosphere is remarkably serene, bathed in natural light filtering through expansive glass windows. The facility’s roof is directly connected to the electricity network, converting the sun’s direct current into alternating current to produce renewable energy for the building.
What sets the factory apart, above all, is how it brings technical innovation and human expertise together under one roof in a fully streamlined manufacturing process. Every step, including T2 (watch assembly), T3 (bracelets) and T4 (shipping), along with stock and logistics, is completed within the same walls.
Floor by Floor

Our tour began in earnest at the T2 phase, dedicated to watch assembly. Here, freshly assembled Co-Axial movements are united with their dials, hands and cases. Entering the T2 department feels like stepping into a high-tech laboratory: the environment is strictly temperature-controlled and dust-free, and watching the watchmakers at work is nothing short of mesmerizing. They deploy cutting-edge technology alongside time-honored hand skills, ensuring that every microscopic screw and delicate hand is placed with absolute precision.
Before moving to the next assembly phase, we were guided to the third floor, the nerve center of OMEGA’s quality and technical control. This is the home of METAS testing, where watches undergo the rigorous Master Chronometer certification. Each timepiece is subjected to a staggering 15,000 gauss, with the highest level of testing spanning eight tests over ten days to verify performance and magnetic resistance standards.

At this level, human expertise and robotic assistance operate in seamless concert. The machines handle tasks with unyielding precision, allowing master technicians to focus entirely on analyzing test results.
Once a watch proves its resilience, it moves to T3, dedicated to the precise attachment of bracelets and straps. Even this seemingly simple step is executed with clinical precision, ensuring the supple integration of metal or leather to the watch head. Next is T4, which handles the final packaging of the timepieces.

At the core of the building, the brand has installed a fully automated storage system rising through three floors. As guests of the building, we could observe its robotic arms in operation through specially designed windows, the large mechanisms moving with a precision calibrated for uninterrupted, reliable operation. The fireproofed central stock holds more than 30,000 boxes of essential watchmaking components, something straight out of a science-fiction film, and only two specially trained individuals are permitted to access it. The reason for this restriction is straightforward: the oxygen level inside has been lowered to 15.2 percent to suppress the spread of fire.

Even so, OMEGA is emphatic that its people remain its greatest asset. Walking the floor, I found the proof self-evident: the focus and dexterity on display at each workstation, across every tier of the operation, are unmistakable. 
Time Well Spent

Looking up through five floors of open space, it is clear that OMEGA has put every square meter to work, bringing technical innovation and human expertise together in a fully streamlined manufacturing process. The facility consolidates all of the brand’s assembly and testing under one roof, maximizing both efficiency and overall output.

Leaving the Biel/Bienne facility and stepping back into the crisp Swiss air, I left with one inescapable conclusion: OMEGA has built a temple to modern horology. It is a place where sustainability, robotic precision and the irreplaceable touch of the human hand tick together in perfect harmony. Walking those floors left me with a deep appreciation for the art of timekeeping and renewed respect for a brand that has genuinely stood the test of time. The journey through the heart of OMEGA may come to an end, but the legacy carries on.
