From childhood performances to “The White Lotus,” American actor Nicholas Duvernay reflects on the lessons and milestones that shaped his journey

Nicholas Duvernay remembers the thrill of his first in-person Hollywood audition—a stark contrast to the self-tapes he had grown accustomed to. “It was exhilarating to feel the response live,” he recalls of his role in “My Dead Dad.” That feeling of connection both on and off-screen has fueled his rise in the industry. Having moved to Los Angeles at nineteen, Duvernay has navigated the highs and lows of Hollywood, embracing each challenge with determination. Now, as he takes on a role in “The White Lotus,” he reflects on the moments that shaped his path.

DAMAN: Hi Nicholas, thank you for taking the time for us. You’ve had a busy few years in the industry—how does it feel to see everything coming together? 
Nicholas Duvernay: At times, it doesn’t feel real. I moved to L.A. at 19 hoping to do this for a living, and to see it all coming together is nothing short of surreal. I usually operate with a head-down mentality but it’s nice to look up and see how far I’ve come. I started training as an actor at 13 and I know that little Nicholas is proud of the actor—and more importantly the man—he has become.

DA: Do you remember the moment you realized that wanted to pursue acting seriously? 
ND: I would always put on little shows for my family as a kid—crying on cue was my party trick. My parents always saw the performer in me. Growing up, I watched westerns with my dad on weekends and realizing I could be on screen playing a cowboy too was a revelation. I started taking classes at 13, discovered the craft and fell even more in love with what it means to be an actor.

DA: You grew up on Long Island before moving to Los Angeles in 2019. That’s quite a leap. What was the biggest adjustment when you first arrived? 
ND: Being away from my family was the hardest part. I lean on them a lot so reducing our relationship to a couple of FaceTime calls a week was tough. Then there was the reality of paying for groceries, rent and acting classes on my own. Balancing the dream with real-life responsibilities was a major adjustment.

DA: What’s the biggest lesson you learned early on that still sticks with you today? 
ND: It’s a business of “no’s” and you really have to love the art of enduring rejections. Also, not taking things personally. It’s easy to see the rejection of your work as a rejection of yourself, but you have to be able to separate the two.

DA: You’ve worked across different genres, from drama to comedy and more. Was there a particular project that felt like a turning point for you? 
ND: “Purple Hearts” was a big one for me. It was the first time I felt like I truly transformed into a character. I had to cut my long curly hair to play a Marine, which was tough because it felt like a part of my identity. Initially, I turned the role down but after some convincing from my team and a heartfelt letter from the director Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum, I accepted. Armando, my character, had some controversial views and was very vocal about them so stepping into his psyche pushed me outside of myself.

DA: Filming season three of “The White Lotus” in Thailand for six months sounds transformative. How did that experience impact you personally and professionally? 
ND: Six months was the longest I’d ever spent away from home for a job. In an ensemble cast, I found myself with a lot of free time on the island. Sometimes it was isolating—when I wasn’t working, my friends and co-stars often had different schedules. But I think isolation teaches you a lot about yourself. On the flip side, when we were together I was surrounded by some of the greatest actors out there. Being able to learn from their experiences was invaluable.
DA: You mentioned that this season is “the biggest, baddest and messiest.” Without giving too much away, what can fans expect from your character? 
ND: Zion is the son of Belinda (Natasha Rothwell). Looking for an escape after finishing his finals, he visits his mother in Thailand—and let’s just say he gets a taste of “The White Lotus” guest experience. That’s all I can reveal for now.

DA: This season has such an incredible ensemble cast. Who was the funniest person on set? And were there any particularly memorable moments that stuck out for you? 
ND: It’s tough to choose but I’d have to say Natasha Rothwell—she’s the wittiest person I’ve ever met. Honorable mentions go to Arnas Fedaravicius since we spent the most time together as well as Jon Gries, Parker Posey, Walton Goggins and Jason Isaacs.
DA: If you could swap roles with any other character from this season, who would it be and why? 
ND: Walton Goggins’ character, Rick Hatchett. I always gravitate toward intense roles and Rick is definitely that. He’s a tortured soul battling grief and so much more—there are just so many layers to explore.

DA: Each season of “The White Lotus” has had its own distinct atmosphere and themes. How does season three set itself apart?? 
ND: Thailand brings an element of spirituality into the mix as a major theme, which wasn’t as prominent in previous seasons. The way it balances the dark tones of the show gives it a different energy.
DA: Let’s switch to fashion for a bit. Collaborating with Banana Republic for their Spring Classics 2025 collection marked your fashion campaign debut. How did this partnership come about? 
ND: It just kind of found me. My team brought it to me and I couldn’t be happier to collaborate with Banana Republic, especially as they’re relaunching their classics collection.

DA: As a New York native now living in Los Angeles, has your fashion sense changed in any way? 
ND: Though I was born in New York, I spent most of my childhood in Atlanta. I’ve never really tied my style to a city. I wear what looks good and feels right. I’m big on proportions—if the ratio is right, it’s for me.

DA: Circling back to film, you’ve played a variety of roles but is there a dream character or genre you’d love to explore next? 
ND: I’d love to dive into thrillers. Films like “Prisoners,” “Se7en” and “Zodiac” have left a lasting impact on me. Lately, I’ve also been drawn to horror, so I would love to venture into that space as well.

DA: Lastly, what’s next for you? Any exciting projects on the horizon? 
ND: I’m excited for whatever comes next. My team and I are being pretty selective, so I’m just trying to be patient for the right opportunity after “The White Lotus.”
