In a sci-fi blend of “Groundhog Day” and “Oblivion,” Tom Cruise once again stars in a post-apocalyptic-themed film. Cruise is an officer who has never been in a combat in his life. He is once forcibly thrown into a mission, and dies within minutes of battle against earth-invading aliens. The Special Forces then brings the fallen soldier back to life and throws him back into the traumatic battle, with a goal of learning the adversaries’ strategy and defeating them. Cruise takes with him valuable lessons and becomes increasingly skilled in combat with each death and rebirth. The question on everyone’s mind is whether Cruise will live to win the war and what happens next.

Amid a bevy of blockbuster CGI stunners out this summer, “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” proves that it is not just another mindless action flick with mind-blowing special effects. The sequel to “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” picks up where it left off, when the tables are turned and genetically- altered apes are the superior beings in charge. More than a treat to the eyes with actor Andy Serkis’ transformation to an ape form and attention-stealing performance as the head ape running things, the film explores the theme of human greed and its potentially disastrous aftermath. The sequel, eerily haunting and thought-provoking, is a worthy adaptation of the “Planet of the Apes” franchise.

Having gone through high school twice, the smoldering Channing Tatum and the endearingly awkward Jonah Hill are now gearing up for college, ready to take undercover drug-busting to a whole new level. What the unlikely duo lacks in youthful, twenty-something physique that college students possess, they more than make up for with their infantile behavior, lending believability to their covert roles. Frat parties, football games and guerilla gun fights unsurprisingly made their way into the film, mixing academic life with the highly charged unpredictability of an undercover mission. The explosive chemistry between Tatum and Hill keeps audiences riveted to their seats, while Ice Cube and Rob Riggle prove to be worthy comedic contenders.

In an effort to put a little pizazz into a mundane family existence, Diaz and Segel try their hands on adult filmmaking. As in the case of Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian, this particular sex tape also premiers all over the neighborhood, with box office viewing figures, to boot. Hilarity ensues with the trouble couple’s extraordinary efforts to prevent friends, family and colleagues from enjoying private viewings of the scandalous film.

Living up to the larger-than-life legend of the invincible Greek demi-god, “Hercules” packs a lot of high-octane punch with all the right components that make a thrilling action flick. Instead of sticking to the myth of Hercules and the twelve labors, the summer blockbuster explores the aftermath of the famed incident, when Hercules has completed the twelve daunting tasks. The mythical figure, debilitated and broken down, is challenged with yet another formidable task to save a kingdom from the hands of adversaries, proving along the way that he’s “still got it.” Although Dwayne Johnson has some big shoes to fill in portraying the Greek superhero, his performance does not disappoint.
