Movie Review: Gangster Squad

It’s hard to go wrong with a good gangster movie, especially when it is stocked with acting heavyweights such as Sean Penn, Josh Brolin, Nick Nolte and Ryan Gosling

The film Gangster Squad chronicles the battle between Los Angeles police and mobsters from the East Coast who attempted to take over the town in the 1940s and 50s. Directed by Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland), the film revels in the stylish clothes and Art Deco decor that dominated Los Angeles during that time period. Penn plays Brooklyn born mob king Mickey Cohen, a gangland boss who gains a stranglehold on LA’s black markets through force as well as political connections and bribes to the police. But a small crew of LAPD outsiders, led by Brolin’s Sgt. John O’Mara, come together to take down Cohen’s criminal empire.
