We head to Phuket, Thailand, to witness the wonder of Louis Vuitton’s high watchmaking and high jewelry creations

March 2024 was a momentous month for Louis Vuitton. After wrapping up the unveiling of LV The Place Bangkok, the French fashion house once again extended its invitation to media representatives across the region, this time to Phuket for a high watchmaking and high jewelry presentation.
The venue, set on a private headland on the island’s west coast, was none other than Amanpuri—definitely a fitting choice for such a prestigious occasion. Amanpuri’s three-story villa was transformed into a temporary nesting for Louis Vuitton’s new and wonderous high watchmaking and high jewelry collections. The sight of the Andaman Sea and the idyllic white sand beach in front of the villa added to the showcase, putting a final breathtaking touch to an already unforgettable moment.
Upon arrival at the villa, we were welcomed by a tropical installation by Louis Vuitton, accompanied by the soothing whispers of the ocean breeze. The villa’s warm setting illuminated every corner of the showcase while amicably greeting guests as they immersed themselves in Louis Vuitton’s haute horlogerie and haute joaillerie universes. Legendary watchmaker and co-founder of La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton, Michel Navas, alongside Louis Vuitton’s artistic director of watches and jewelry, Francesca Amfitheatrof, guided the assembled guests through the exhibition while offering insights into the remarkable craftsmanship behind each novelty.
Among the items on display, five were particularly noteworthy, starting with the Deep Time Chapter II High Jewelry Collection. A total of 50 one-of-a-kind pieces are set across ten themes of new interpretations and complementary designs, all narrated by a poetic storyline. It tells about the voyage of Deep Time, particularly when two supercontinents dominated our planet and went through an apocalyptic evolution that transformed the entire world. Each element was later translated through the most extraordinary gemstones.
The next display showcased the Louis Vuitton Escale Cabinet of Wonders, which held three limited-edition wristwatches inspired by the fine and rare personal collections of Gaston-Louis Vuitton. In this case, a selection of antique tsuba—hand guards placed between the hilt and the blade on a traditional Japanese sword and usually decorated—directly influenced the designs and became the symbol of the collection. The strong influence of Japanese culture was further reflected through the use of koi fish, serpent and dragons on the dials.

No less impressive is the Louis Vuitton Voyager Flying Tourbillon Poinçon de Genève Plique-à-Jour. As the intricating name suggests, this watch reveals the many facets of craftsmanship within the maison’s high watchmaking world: There’s the plique-à-jour enamel on the dial as well as a flying tourbillon movement developed at La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton. Moreover, the watch also bears the illustrious Poinçon de Genève seal of quality at the 9 o’clock position. This revered hallmark indicates that the manufacturing and finishing of every watch component conforms to the highest level of quality, making making the Voyager Flying Tourbillon Poinçon de Genève a true horological masterpiece.
The Tambour Moon Flying Tourbillon Poinçon de Genève Saphhire Frank Gehry was another exceptional piece highlighted at the event. This timepiece is the result of a collaboration between La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton and renowned architect Frank Gehry. This special piece drew inspiration from two of Gehry’s most impressive designs, namely the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris and the Louis Vuitton Maison in Seoul. The designs’ transparent façade became the watch’s dial, providing an uninterrupted view of the flying tourbillon calibre underneath it as well as the Poinçon de Geneve seal.

Last but absolutely not least is the Louis Vuitton Tambour Slim Vivienne Jumping Hours, which boasts the maison’s mascot, the mischievous Vivienne, in its extraordinary new adventure in space. For this fantastical journey, Louis Vuitton presented a unique jumping hour complication. The dial, meanwhile, is crafted in blue mother-of-pearl and features a diamond constellation forming Louis Vuitton’s Monogram flowers along with miniature paintings of a rocket and planets.

And with that, the tour of Louis Vuitton’s high jewelry and high watchmaking showcase came to an end. The evening then continued with cocktails at sunset and an intimate dinner. Above all else, the all too short event once again demonstrated Louis Vuitton’s mastery of luxury and craftsmanship as it strives to create masterpieces that will leave lasting impressions across the years.
