For Dior’s Spring/Summer 2024 collection, Kim Jones once again delves into the maison’s archives and manages to present a fresh take on the its heritage

Over the course of the last half-decade, Kim Jones has not only made a mark in Christian Dior’s history but has significantly influenced the entire fashion industry. Through his innovative vision and bold approach, he has reshaped traditional notions of luxury, breathing fresh life into the brand. Through his collections, Jones seamlessly merges the heritage of Dior with cutting-edge design, creating a unique and captivating aesthetic that resonates with audiences worldwide.
Dior’s Spring/Summer 2024 show—held at the vast complex of the École Militaire in Paris—presented the collection within a silver, futuristic box. A wide runway featuring gray metal tiles spanned the space, serving as the stage for a captivating display. Emerging from beneath the runway in a three-by-seventeen grid formation, an ensemble of models brought the collection to life.

As a celebration of Jones’s five-year tenure at the house, the Dior Men Spring/Summer 2024 collection paid homage to the designers who paved the way before him, including Yves Saint Laurent, Gianfranco Ferré and Marc Bohan. One thing that connected them all was Christian Dior’s cannage, the famous pattern inspired by the woven rattan chairs in which guests sat at his first salon show in 1947.
The collection showcases a blend of tradition and innovation, bridging the gap between feminine and masculine aesthetics, from the salon to the street and from classic New Look to contemporary New Wave. It intertwines the histories of men’s and women’s fashion, merging British tailoring with haute couture craftsmanship.

“Dior is an haute couture house: It is all about the clothes,” Jone explains. “At the heart of Dior is silhouette, shape, technique and fabrication of the very highest order. I like to think that in my five years of being here—this is my fifth-anniversary show and collection—I have never forgotten this. It’s a culture we have inherited from womenswear past and applied to womenswear present. And for the first time in our collections, it’s a collage of influences from different Dior predecessors and eras we wanted to pay tribute to at once—together with some of our own. All are connected through texture and technique alongside some of the Dior pop icons, particularly the cannage.”

The pieces exude a modern, playful and practical vibe, effortlessly combining luxury with utility. Classic menswear items like Harrington jackets, polo shirts, crew necks and cardigans are elevated through symbolic techniques, such as tweeds, embroideries and the iconic cannage pattern. It was a mesmerizing journey through the kaleidoscope of Dior designs across time.

Saint Laurent’s iconic tailoring serves as a focal point in the collection, with a particular focus on the volumes, vents, pleats and necklines from his 1959 collections. These elements are then integrated into relaxed masculine suiting, summer ensembles and sweeping coats, adding a touch of effortless sophistication to each look.

A variety of accessories further enhance the collection’s allure. There are shoes inspired by the Lady Dior bag of 1995, featuring a circular logo on heavy-soled loafers and slides reminiscent of New Wave crepe. Aside from that, the accessory range also include a variety of bags in different styles, colors and textures, from pop fluorescent saddles to utilitarian tweed rucksacks. All in all, this collection exemplified Jones’ attention to tailoring, while skillfully blending traditional elegance with contemporary, relaxed and movement-focused pieces.
