There is a distinct silence in the middle of Tokyo’s morning rush hour. Stepping into an early morning commuter train on the Keikyū Airport Line, transferring to the Toei Asakusa Line toward Ginza, I found myself embedded in a dense matrix of quiet focus. Despite the claustrophobic proximity, no one spoke. There was only the rhythmic click-clack of steel rails and a collective commitment to absolute punctuality. In Tokyo, time is a shared social contract executed with flawless discipline.

It was a fitting introduction to the journey ahead. Grand Seiko’s invitation to DAMAN was an unusual one: not the expected walkthrough of ateliers and workshops, but a full immersion into the landscapes and philosophies that birthed the brand’s watchmaking ideology—anchored by the new Spring Drive U.F.A Ushio 300 Diver models, the SLGB023 and SLGB025. For an audience accustomed to the linear, mechanical storytelling of Swiss horology, this journey revealed a more poetic truth: in Japanese craftsmanship, multiple layers always exist beneath the surface.

THE GENESIS OF INTENTION

Our immersion began at the Seiko Museum Ginza, a vertical chronicle of time spanning seven levels. It begins in the basement with extreme timepieces built for sports and deep-sea diving, moves past a towering automaton clock on the first floor—the famous Rondeau La Tour—and winds through historical galleries before culminating on the sixth floor, which is dedicated entirely to Grand Seiko.

Before we ascended, our hosts presented a guiding thesis:

“Before the tides, there is intention. At the Seiko Museum, the story begins with the relentless pursuit of precision and innovation.”

Two specific exhibits recontextualized my understanding of the brand. The first was a fused mass of pocket watches melted during the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake. In the aftermath, founder Kintaro Hattori publicly pledged to replace every customer timepiece lost in his care with a brand-new equivalent, completely free of charge. This act of honor cemented an enduring bond of trust with the Japanese public—a foundational ethos that still underpins the brand.

The second was the wadokei, or traditional Japanese mechanical clocks, on the third floor. Before Japan adopted the Western solar calendar in 1873, days and nights were divided into flexible segments that stretched and contracted with the seasons, tracking 72 poetic micro-seasons. The wadokei were marvels of ingenuity, adapting fixed-interval European gear trains to calculate these shifting, organic intervals. This historic ability to bend complex technology to serve a natural philosophy explains exactly how Grand Seiko operates today: mastering foreign mechanisms to express a local, organic rhythm.

INTO THE CURRENT: THE IZU COASTLINE AND SHU-HA-RI

The next morning, Tokyo’s neon gave way to the volcanic greens of the coast as we boarded the Saphir Odoriko scenic train toward the Izu Peninsula. Our guide notes framed the transition:

“The waters surrounding Japan are shaped by the Kuroshio and Oyashio currents. Together with shifting tides and winds these forces shape the coastline … revealing the effects of ushio over time. Later, we joined a presentation led by Hiroki Oya, Product Merchandiser at Grand Seiko, and Kiyotaka Sakai, the award-winning designer responsible for some of the brand’s most exquisite timepieces. Two conceptual metaphors stood out. First, designing an ultra-high-grade movement mirrors the art of bonsai—compressing immense, living complexity into a hyper-confined ecosystem. Second is shu-ha-ri, the martial arts philosophy of mastery: learning the rules (shu), breaking them (ha) and transcending them (ri). The Ushio Diver respects the geometric constraints of Grand Seiko’s historic 1967 Grammar of Design, yet cleanly breaks the traditional mold to create a high-performance sports watch.

Hiroki Oya underscored the technical execution behind this evolution:

“More than 20 years after the first 9R Spring Drive, we have finally achieved a next-generation, Ultra Fine Accuracy (U.F.A.) Spring Drive. The key point is that the diver’s model was not an afterthought; it was part of the original concept from the start. The ability to design the movement and case as a unified set to find integrated solutions is a defining strength of Grand Seiko as a true manufacture.”

This integrated approach yields a slimmer, more ergonomic profile powered by a movement boasting a three-day power reserve and an accuracy of ±20 seconds per year. Culturally, the aesthetic relies on a different artistic paradigm, which Kiyotaka Sakai detailed:

“Have you heard of the Japanese concept of mitate? For our signature dial patterns, we frequently incorporate this philosophy. Rather than depicting a natural scene as a literal copy, mitate utilizes a higher level of artistic abstraction to stimulate the viewer’s imagination. By intentionally avoiding overly literal expressions, we are able to create a much richer, more poetic form of visual expression.”

Sakai noted that this blend of artistry and precision forms the very identity of the brand: “Since its inception, Grand Seiko has pursued an uncompromising design philosophy based on two core pillars: functional value as a high-precision wristwatch, and emotional value that evokes a sense of pure beauty through its case geometry and styling.”

THE DEEP LAYERS: CONVERGENCES AND CONTEMPLATION

Our third day introduced us to Kohei Ueno, a professional Japanese freediver and underwater photographer. Ueno spoke passionately about the clash of the warm Kuroshio and freezing Oyashio currents off the coast. This massive collision dictates regional climate and creates a highly stratified, fertile marine environment—a geological reality that every Japanese child learns in school.

This concept materialized vividly during lunch, which featured local kinmedai (golden eye snapper). Harvested from depths of 300 to 600 meters, this delicacy highlighted the multi-layered relationship the local culture shares with the sea, mirroring the depth of the Ushio’s dial.

In the afternoon, we rode cable cars to the Ao Terrace at Izu Panorama Park, observing how the movement of water becomes a composition where currents, tides and land exist in perfect balance. The emotional peak arrived at Koganezaki Park as our guide notes read: “As the sun sets, the rhythm of ushio turns inward … a moment that invites reflection.”

It had been raining heavily, shrouding the coast in gray mist. But precisely as we reached the cliff edge, the weather cleared and the clouds parted over Suruga Bay to reveal a sharp view of Mount Fuji on the horizon. Simultaneously, a spectacular double rainbow arched across the eastern sky while crepuscular “god rays” pierced the western clouds. Looking at the dial of the Ushio 300, it was impossible not to feel the deep, contemplative gravity driving its design.

THE FORCE BELOW THE SURFACE

The final day brought us to Tago, a quiet fishing village on the rugged west coast. Alongside the Tago Diving Center, I geared up and plunged into the Pacific for a snorkeling session.

The recent rains left the water murky and restless, reducing visibility but at the same timeamplifying the physical sensation. In the open water, the abstract concept of ushio dissolved into a tangible reality as undercurrents pulled against my body. Swimming near marine cliffs, I traced the heavily stratified lines of ancient volcanic sediment carved into the rock faces—a geological history book written by the sea. A poetic note originally penned for Dogashima cave captured the sentiment perfectly:

“Across centuries of tidal motion, ushio leaves its mark where cliffs and sculpted rock formations stand as evidence of the ocean’s persistent force.”

THE LUXURY OF DELIBERATION

Reflecting on those four days, two themes stand out for the modern watch enthusiast. The first is the brilliance of mitate. While a typical Swiss sports watch focuses on literal representations, Grand Seiko relies on artistic abstraction to spark the wearer’s imagination.

The second is a profound sense of long-term intentionality. When Grand Seiko asserts that its next-generation diver watch was not an afterthought, it demonstrates a characteristically Japanese approach to creation. Nothing is rushed; everything is meticulously planned and executed over decades of quiet dedication.
