Matthew M. Williams’ forays into the Givenchy universe always engages his Californian roots. And since he arrived in 2020, Givenchy has leaned towards a more relaxed style. Last season, he explored the great tailoring trend and then incorporated tartans into the looks. He also added a touch of couture to elevate the casual collection. For spring/summer 2024, the same approach has been applied as if it is the second part of the fall/winter 2023 collection. In a presentation held at the courtyard of the Hôtel National des Invalides in Paris, Williams initially showcased classic formalwear in oversized silhouettes, then toned it down with sporty ensembles and utilitarian styles. He injected pastel hues like blue, soft yellow and salmon pink and sometimes styled them with denim or tailored pants.

The main accent from the collection is definitely the perforated shirt, reflecting a bold statement but in a subtle manner. From the accessories line, Williams combined retro styles with a futuristic touch, as seen in the harness-like belts and sunglasses. The shoes, which all looked clean and minimal, struck the perfect balance with the rest of the collection. Moreover, Williams added slouchy backpacks and a small sling bag to top off some of the looks, evoking a sense of street culture in the collection.

Through attention to detail, keen perspective on future trends and technical approach, Williams proves that the less intricate the collection is, the better. But to keep it more dynamic with current directions, he added splashes of his eccentricity, making the whole collection a fusion of Parisian and American styles in a decent formula.
