TRANSLANTIC

Stars Gillian Jacobs, Ralph Amoussou, Deleila Piasko, Lucas Englander, Cory Michael Smith, Corey Stoll

New Netflix series “Transatlantic” is inspired by the events described in Julie Orringer’s 2019 novel “The Flight Portfolio” as well as the true story of the Emergency Rescue Committee. The show focuses on international group that put their lives at risk to help more than 2,000 refugees get out of occupied France. Back in 1940, Varian Fry, played by Cory Michael Smith, went to Marseille with a list of artists and writers who are in danger. Fry hoped that in just a few weeks, he could help them get away. He worked to procure fake documents, raise emergency funds and set up a way for the refugees to get across Spain and Portugal to safer ports. All in all, “Transatlantic” presents an exciting combination of a forbidden love, dangerous adventure and a kind of courage that is hard to imagine.

SUCCESSION

Stars Brian Cox, Jeremy Strong, Kieran Culkin, Hiam Abbass, Sarah Snook, Alan Ruck

The fourth season of Emmy-nominated drama series “Succession” is now airing on HBO and HBO GO. Once again, audiences are presented with how the perspective of a patriarchal father and his offspring provides new insight into the interplay of power and family dynamics. While Logan, the father figure, still stands “a hundred feet tall,” the Roy brothers will band together this season, forming a rebel alliance. Still, the family grows closer during the sale of media conglomerate Waystar Royco to tech visionary Lukas Matsson (Alexander Skarsgård), which causes even more existential anxiety and family strife.

BEEF

Stars Patti Yasutake, Young Mazino, Ali Wong, Steven Yeun, Mia Serafino, Justin H. Min

Steven Yeun and Ali Wong play the leads in “Beef.” The comedy drama series centered around the lives of two strangers come together when they get into a fight on the road. Danny Cho (Steven Yeun) is a struggling contractor, while Amy Lau (Ali Wong) is a self-made businesswoman who seems to have a picture-perfect life. Across 10 episodes, their feud is all they can think about, even though their lives and relationships are tied together in many ways.

EXTRAPOLATIONS

Stars Meryl Streep, Tobey Maguire, Edward Norton, Kit Harington

“Extrapolations” is the brainchild of Scott Z. Burns, the producer and writer of hit series “Contagion.” The anthology series promises in-depth narratives on the most pressing climate change issues facing the world today. Interestingly, “Extrapolations” falls neatly into the same category as similar projects showcasing how the climate crisis on a global scale has the potential to destabilize societies. Through the lens of eight unique narratives about love, work, faith and family, audiences are made to feel the urgency of the fight for the future of humanity
