With the opening of P. Johnson’s first showroom at Comte Manoir Residence, Jakarta, founders Patrick Johnson and Tom Riley are bringing their signature approach to modern tailoring to a new audience. After more than a decade of visiting Indonesia and cultivating a loyal client base, the brand has finally established a space that feels less like a store and more like a home—where comfort, craftsmanship and personalized service take center stage. In this exclusive conversation, Johnson and Riley discuss why Jakarta is the perfect fit for their soft, versatile tailoring, how they’ve adapted their collections for the local climate and their vision for building long-lasting relationships with clients in the region.
DAMAN: With P. Johnson finally opening its first store in Jakarta, what made you realize that this market is essential to the brand?
Patrick Johnson: We&#8217;ve been coming here for about 10 years now and over that time we&#8217;ve met so many great people we&#8217;ve really connected with. It feels like we&#8217;ve built a little family and community here. From that foundation, things have grown naturally and now we&#8217;re genuinely excited to open this beautiful new space. We also have many Indonesian clients who visit our locations in New York, London and Australia, so expanding here felt like an obvious next step. And with the relaxed lifestyle and climate being so similar to Australia, our soft, lightweight tailoring feels like a perfect fit.
Tom Riley : There’s an energy here that’s hard to ignore. You can sense this constant drive—people in Jakarta always want to improve, to move forward, to elevate everything they do. That momentum is inspiring and it aligns so well with what we aim to create as a brand.
DA: You’ve both been visiting Jakarta for years—why does now feel like the perfect moment to establish a permanent store here?
PJ: We started the business 17 years ago, which still feels quite young, so we’ve always taken things one step at a time. With the Jakarta showroom, we wanted to give it our full attention and make sure we did it properly. Jakarta feels like a home to us and building a good home takes care, intention and love. We’re not a massive brand—we prefer to grow thoughtfully. The timing aligned perfectly with our partners here, and then this amazing space came along. Everything fell into place gradually, slowly but surely, never rushed. That’s important, because we’re building something we want to last for a very long time.

DA: What kind of customer experience does P. Johnson aim to create for clients in Jakarta?
PJ: We want people to feel as though they’re stepping into our home—comfortable, relaxed and at ease. That’s exactly why we chose this location rather than a shopping mall. As a brand, one of our main goals is to help people build wardrobes that last a lifetime and we believe that creating a more intimate environment—a place where you can sit down, relax and enjoy a coffee—helps make that possible. In a setting like this, we get to know our clients on a deeper level. Many of them eventually become our friends and we become theirs, as we work together to create beautiful wardrobes.
DA: What has been the biggest challenge in bringing the full P. Johnson experience to Indonesia?
PJ: Simply not being here enough. But thankfully, we’ve had really good partners here who share the same ethos and philosophy, which makes everything easier. Secondly, it was a little bit of a challenge finding the right space because when we first came here, everyone was suggesting to open in a shopping mall. I love malls, I think they&#8217;re fantastic, but as I mentioned earlier, we wanted to create home here.
TR: In terms of service, we’ll be handling the major measuring and fittings ourselves. Either I’ll come personally, or members of our trained team from Australia will fly in to do the fittings. Training people to fit well takes a long time, so we’ll build that locally over time, but for now we’ll continue operating on a trunk-show basis. The difference now is that we actually have a home here, which makes everything so much easier. I flew in from Australia last night—it’s simple to arrive and get straight to work the next day. I’ll be coming around five to six times a year, and our team from New York will also visit. So between all of us traveling here regularly, we’re making the service much more accessible.
DA: As best friends who built a brand together, how do you balance your dynamic and what do you do to keep the relationship—and the business healthy?
TR: I think we’re always pushing in the same direction. This business is like our shared child, so we’re constantly working on it together. Staying focused on the work naturally keeps us aligned and moving forward.
PJ: I’ve never found it difficult working with Tom. From the start, we’ve always done different things and balanced each other out. It all comes from respect. I have an enormous amount of respect for Tom, and when you respect someone deeply, everything becomes easier. I’m quite an impatient person by nature—I like to move fast all the time—but working with Tom helps me slow down when I need to and take a breath. We’ve known each other for over 25 years and we’ve always had a good understanding of one another. We complement each other really well and that’s been true from the beginning. In business, I don’t think we’ve ever had an argument. We might disagree on things, of course, but ultimately we want the same thing and that keeps us grounded and connected.

DA: Are there any Indonesia-exclusive pieces or services being introduced specifically for this location? 
PJ: With the opening of this location, our next collection will be heavily influenced by Indonesia. We’re now working with several groups of Indonesian artisans—though I can’t reveal too much yet—to bring local craft into our work. It’s been an incredible experience. My design team is here now, meeting with weavers, jewelry makers and other craftspeople because we want to share this artistry not only in Jakarta but with the rest of the world. As a designer, that’s the most exciting part of opening here. Australia doesn’t have much of this kind of traditional craft, so discovering it in Indonesia has been amazing. We’re even hoping to bring some of the food and entertaining culture back into our spaces. You’ll definitely see more Indonesian influence across the brand—but hopefully with a few relaxed Australian touches as well.
DA: How does the brand see local men’s style evolving, and how will P. Johnson respond?
TR: It’s constantly unfolding. One of the first things we noticed when we arrived was the sense of dignity—people here really care about how they dress. There’s a formality and attention to detail we haven’t seen elsewhere in Asia. It’s exciting because clients are open-minded, willing to take guidance and eager to improve their wardrobes. For us, that’s a lot of fun—you can suggest something new and they genuinely engage with it.
PJ: There’s also a rich history of elegant dressing here, which we love exploring. Our goal is to reinterpret that for today—finding what’s relevant and practical now, while respecting that elegance. Even in the last ten years, the way people dress here has evolved rapidly. There’s a real focus on comfort, versatility and outfits that can work across different occasions. Everyone’s moving around more, so wardrobes need to be adaptable. It’s been exciting to witness this evolution and I’m really curious to see how it develops over the next ten years.
What trends do you think will define the next era of modern tailoring? 
P: Trends are shifting fast, influenced by so many sources, but we focus on the bigger lifestyle changes. Our clients are much healthier than before—they care more about their bodies and longevity. On the streets here, you can see it; people are running and exercising more than ten years ago. That focus on health and well-being translates into tailoring too—people want comfort and clothes that feel effortless.
T: That’s why we’re doing more casual clothing—around 50 percent of what we offer now. It’s about filling out the wardrobe, blending casual with formal and creating pieces for special occasions too. As wardrobes get more casual, dressing up becomes more intentional and enjoyable. The trend toward fitness and comfort is shaping tailoring today, which aligns perfectly with what we’ve been doing for 17 years—soft, wearable, effortless clothing.
