NAGOYA’S PRIDE. Nestled snuggly in a secondfloor corner of Plaza Senayan is a quiet and unpretentious restaurant specializing in one of Japan’s most celebrated delicacies: unagi, or Japanese freshwater eel.
To be exact, the aptly named Unacho (Jl. Asia Afrika No. 8, Jakarta; +62 21 5790 6080; unacho-hitsumabushi.com) specializes in hitsumabushi, which is charcoal-grilled unagi on rice served Nagoya-style and traditionally eaten in four different ways. The restaurant itself is designed much like a typical Japanese restaurant, with bamboo accents adorning the establishment’s décor. But whatever it may lack in visual punch, it more than makes up for in the quality of food on offer.
