Diesel launches its latest offering: a womenswear and menswear capsule collection dedicated to the Year of the Rat, celebrating the Chinese Lunar New Year, and taking the animal into a fashionable new territory.
Graffiti and the visual language of the street become the crux for the collection’s graphics; the rat is its central theme. The lineup gravitates around twelve key items. Leather jackets, outerwear denim, and black and red bombers are treated with graffiti-style illustrations of the animal, which are surrounded by thunderbolts and script. These same themes are carried over to t-shirts, hoodies, 5 pocket jeans, knitwear, sweatshirts, underwear and accessories. The Year of the Rat capsule collection will only be released in select Diesel stores and on www.diesel.com.
As the narrative goes, the Rat is the first animal in the Chinese Zodiac cycle. It achieved its position by outsmarting its fellow fauna competitors. The animal is seen as a sign of wealth and of surplus, and is also associated with the midnight hours.
For the capsule collection, DIESEL’s designers took a lo-fi artistic approach, creating these youthful graffiti motifs with arty, hand-drawn, animated, scribbled or brushed treatments. The Rat symbol, as interpreted by DIESEL, retains a childlike edge while also lending an eye-catching aesthetic graphic to the lineup. The clothing itself is fundamentally DIESEL—irreverent, bold, casual and confident—and it is given a unique perspective through this creatively celestial approach.
Key pieces include: leather jackets, which are of a classic motorcycle, zip-front shape for both men and women. They feature metal detailing throughout, and, across the shoulder-blades, they boast extra-large DIESEL logos with drawings of rats and lightning bolts printed on top.
Additional jackets, like puffers, reversible bombers, denim pieces and more, are anchored in a midnight-black palette and further implement these emblems. JoggJeans—a regular slim fit for men, as well as a slim fit for women—feature red mouse patches and lightly washed dyes.
Standout accessories include a unisex black nylon crinkle backpack with a gray pocket, and one women’s shoulder bag style in gray crinkle nylon with an embossed Diesel logo. They glimmer subtly in the twilight, and make for a perfect carryall as you head into the night.
