<h2>LABOR OF LOVE. Dian Arthen catches up with Cinta Laura Kiehl in her second appearance on DAMAN to talk about her life and career in Hollywood</h2>

Seven years ago, when DA MAN first met <a href="http://daman.co.id/cinta-laura-unveiled-exclusive/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Cinta Laura Kiehl</a>, the then 17-year-old starlet was just about to go to college in the United States, and <a href="http://daman.co.id/?s=Hollywood" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hollywood</a> wasn’t exactly a top priority for her. “If an opportunity comes my way, I’ll take it,” she said back then. “But if it doesn’t, I won’t mind either.” Today, Kiehl has already graduated cum laude from Columbia University where she double-majored in psychology and German literature, starred in her first Hollywood movie (“<a href="http://daman.co.id/?s=The+Philosopher" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Philosopher</a>”) alongside Bonnie Wright in 2013 and has attended quite a few prestigious movie award ceremonies including the <a href="http://daman.co.id/?s=Oscars" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Oscars</a> and <a href="http://daman.co.id/?s=BAFTA" target="_blank" rel="noopener">BAFTA</a>.
When I met her for her second photo shoot with DA MAN, she was actually just a day away from flying back to the U.S. after spending Christmas and New Year’s in Indonesia. Prior to that, she just finished filming “The Ninth Passenger,” a thriller about eight passengers on a yacht left adrift in the middle of the ocean, with a ninth mystery passenger. In the movie, Kiehl plays as Nicole, one of the lead characters. “She is a college student who is actually very smart, but she does like to party and then she is the rebel of the group,” she spells out her character. “And I’m kind of the one who persuades everyone to get on the yacht.”
Unlike her past TV and movie appearances which usually see her playing as either the oppressed protagonist or the innocent girl who always gets bullied by others, her latest role is the exact opposite: The German-Indonesian starlet now gets to act as a troublemaker. Kiehl, however, notes that her character is much more complex than the typical “bad girl” we’ve seen in dozens of other movies. “You know how in many movies, the rebellious girl is usually the slutty one? My character is not like that,” she points out. “My character is actually very bright, knows her worth and is very opinionated.”

“The Ninth Passenger” is not the only new update in Kiehl’s career, as, at the end of last year, she hired a new agent and manager from a solid talent management, both from well-known Hollywood-based agencies. She notes how it’s very important for her—or any aspiring actor, for that matter—to be represented by reputable firms in the U.S. entertainment industry since casting directors from big productions usually look out for new talents from these agencies. As a result, for the past couple of years or so, Kiehl has auditioned for one of the new “<a href="http://daman.co.id/?s=Star+Wars" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Star Wars</a>” movies, the musical flick “Les Misérables,” as well as TV series like “<a href="http://daman.co.id/?s=Scream+Queen" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Scream Queen</a>.” 
The extremely rigorous and highly competitive audition process for Hollywood film projects has definitely humbled Kiehl. “I’m very grateful that, throughout my career in Indonesia, I’ve never had to audition for anything,” she quips. “Offers just come and all I need to do is say yes or no.” Now she’s facing a whole different ball game. “Hollywood is a tough cookie, a tough nut to crack,” she admits before elaborating: “There are five to ten steps before you actually get a role, and even then there’s no guarantee that it’s going to air. So, you’ve got to have a lot of strength and perseverance in order to survive and maintain your sanity.”

To further increase her chances of surviving, Kiehl has also taken acting lessons and—surprisingly—started learning Spanish. Apparently, her mixed ancestry has resulted in her being pitched for racially ambiguous roles. She also gets repeatedly mistaken for a Latina. So, her manager and agent told her that it’d be good if she could speak Spanish, so that they can start pitching her for Latina roles. “<a href="http://daman.co.id/?s=Hollywood" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hollywood</a> is obviously very meticulous in the way they choose their actors,” she adds. “If the role says ‘18-year-old, Latina’ and you cast an actor under that category, they have to be able to speak Spanish.”
Furthermore, Kiehl has also been readying herself to get into the casting season for new TV series that will run from January to April. “Growing up, I’ve always envisioned myself being in movies,” she reminisces. “But because the TV industry in the States is really growing, it’d be most advantageous for my career to star in TV series.” Plus, we’re also seeing more and more established movie stars flocking to TV, although Kiehl jokingly says this only makes it that much harder for a newcomer like her to get good roles.

At this stage of her career, she still doesn’t think that she has actually “made it” in Hollywood. “I think that’s very relative because, you know, according to many people I’ve made it because obviously ‘The Ninth Passenger’ is a movie with pretty solid cast and I’m part of it,” Kiehl says. Personally, though, she would only consider herself successful once she becomes a series regular on a TV show. “I don’t mean that I have to be the lead per se,” she elaborates, “but as long as I’m there in every episode, then I would say I’ve made it.” Then she adds, “Or once I star in a big blockbuster movie. And, again, when I say ‘star,’ it means have a substantial role that actually creates an impact.”

For now, it certainly appears that Kiehl’s prospects in the U.S. entertainment industry are heading upwards. That being said, she has set a time limit for herself. If in the next three to four years she doesn’t feel like her entertainment career isn’t progressing the way she wants it to, she is planning to pursue a master’s degree and look at other options in life. “I guess my biggest principle in life is that I refuse to live a mediocre life,” she states outright. “So whatever it is I end up doing, whether I continue as an entertainer or I start involving myself with the corporate world, I want to make sure that I can create a positive impact not just in Indonesia but in the world.” That certainly sounds like a person that’s anything but mediocre.
