MUSICAL STYLE. Music award shows are a hard place to find the latest in men’s style, but there are those rare performers that come with enough swagger to make you look twice
Billboard has long been a publication that many musical fans look to discover what’s hot in the music business. Musicians also strive to one day make a place in the top-ten list of the publication’s prestigious musical charts. To award some of the best musicians of the year, Billboard has held the Billboard Music Awards since 1989. Unlike other music Awards where the nominees are based on the decision from a panel of judges, the finalists for the Billboard Music Awards are based on album and digital songs’ sales, streaming, radio airplay, touring and social engagement of the previous year. Because of this, the array of musicians and celebrities present show more varieties than something like at the Grammy’s.
As the awards were held in Las Vegas this year, the scorching summer heat was unbearable, but it wasn’t clear whether the stars were affected by it or not as many still came dressed to impress. We have sorted through the many red-carpet hitters-and-missers of the event this year, to present our selection of the best-dressed men at the 2017 Billboard Music Awards.
John Legend in Gucci
The always-stylish musician John Legend came dressed head-to-toe in Gucci and he did not disappoint. From the front the clean-cut double-breasted suit looked glamorous, but the moment he turned around the embroidered Gucci cat showed that he was game to party. You can say his suit was like a wearable mullet, business up front and party at the back.
G-Eazy in Saint Laurent
The music producer-turned-rapper G-Eazy cleans up well, replacing his typical bad-boy biker style with a more classy all-black Saint Laurent suit.
Ansel Elgort
Donning a jacket and going all-black seems to be Ansel Elgort’s go-to attire when he’s attending a more casual award show. As one of the evening’s presenters, his style is very different from the usual clean-cut style that we often see him in on the red carpet.
Diplo in Thom Browne
It looks like DJ Diplo came dressed anticipating the Las Vegas heat, in a grey suit by Thom Browne and sporting Gucci slippers. This is one good example of how to dress this summer.
Jussie Smollett in Emporio Armani Jacket
The “Empire” star still looked suave and stylish in his simple attire that he not only wore on the red carpet but also on stage to present an award. Jussie Smollet wore an Emporio Armani Jacket, shirt and pants by Ports 1961, and Jimmy Choo shoes.
Jason Derulo
His opening performance at the Billboard Music Awards with Nicky Minaj and Lil’ Wayne pretty much stole the show, and his appearance on the red carpet also did the same. Sporting a funky green velvet number, Jason Derulo may not have been dressed for the weather, but he was sure dressed to impress.
Machine Gun Kelly
The look shouldn’t really be on the list, as it looks a little too matching, but we think it still deserves an honorable mention for looking cool. If only rapper Machine Gun Kelly chose to wear a black shirt under the suit, and not one that matched it, he would have pulled this look off perfectly.
