Past midnight, however, the air raid sirens were sounded throughout the city as a total blackout was ordered. Between 3:16 a.m. and 4:14 a.m., 1,400 anti-aircraft shells were fired sporadically into the dark night sky targeting what was thought to be Japanese assault forces.</h2>
