Bali’s best eats: MAMA SAN BALI by Will Meyrick

Smoking-hot Mama. High-style Bali dining at the newly opened Mama San Bali restaurant by celebrity chef Will Meyrick of Sarong fame.

It’s a huge space with two floors and they still can’t squeeze everyone in because it’s so popular. The Sarong group and chef extraordinaire Will Meyrick have created another masterpiece of food and ambience.

If you like Sarong, but sometimes feel it’s a bit too formal for your Bali mood, the ideal alternative is the new Mama San Bali (62-361/730-436) located in Kerobokan near Sunset Road.

It has a similar menu as Sarong (pungent Asian comfort food done in fine-dining style), but a touch more affordable and laid-back. The biggest difference is the colonial-era vibe.

Part Shanghai Grand-era, part Gatsby-era New York, part English gentleman’s club, the upstairs bar (with cocktails created by mixologist Joel Fraser) is only missing a view through the floor-to-vaulted-ceiling windows of the Bund and the Huangpu river, circa 1933.

Alas, you’ll have to settle for some slightly woebegone rukos across the road. Nonetheless, you can revel in the rich ambience, fab beverages and awe-inspiring cuisine at this sexy retro mama.
