It&#8217;s a huge space with two floors and they still can&#8217;t squeeze everyone in because it&#8217;s so popular. The Sarong group and chef extraordinaire Will Meyrick have created another masterpiece of food and ambience.
If you like<a href="http://sarongbali.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> Sarong</a>, but sometimes feel it&#8217;s a bit too formal for your Bali mood, the ideal alternative is the new <a href="http://mamasanbali.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Mama San Bali</a> (62-361/730-436) located in Kerobokan near Sunset Road.

It has a similar menu as <a href="http://sarongbali.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sarong</a> (pungent Asian comfort food done in fine-dining style), but a touch more affordable and laid-back. The biggest difference is the colonial-era vibe.
Part<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Shanghai#Chinese_society" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> Shanghai Grand-era</a>, part Gatsby-era New York, part English gentleman&#8217;s club, the upstairs bar (with cocktails created by mixologist Joel Fraser) is only missing a view through the floor-to-vaulted-ceiling windows of the Bund and the Huangpu river, circa 1933.
Alas, you&#8217;ll have to settle for some slightly woebegone rukos across the road. Nonetheless, you can revel in the rich ambience, fab beverages and awe-inspiring cuisine at this sexy retro mama.
