Swiss watch manufacturer Audemars Piguet continues its tradition of innovation with the introduction of a timepiece featuring a brand-new colored forged carbon in its Royal Oak Concept collection. The use of Chroma Forged Technology (CFT) represents a leap forward, offering unprecedented durability and aesthetic possibilities. Unlike previous iterations, where carbon fibers were simply coated with colored resin, this new technology allows the fibers themselves to be pigmented and arranged, which expands the variety of creative expressions that can be achieved. This innovation means that every case produced is one of a kind, the hand-made patterns varying subtly in every iteration.

The result of over five years of R&amp;D by Audemars Piguet, the new CFT carbon combines lightweight strength with enhanced resistance to heat, humidity and shocks, making it especially suitable for high-performance watches. In contrast to traditional forged carbon, CFT carbon features a lower resin content, which results in a non-porous material that is less prone to scratching. The development process involves manually layering pigmented carbon fibers and resin in a mille-feuille structure, followed by compression and finally curing in an autoclave, ensuring a flawless, air-bubble-free block of carbon. This block is then machined into the desired component.
The end result is a material that embodies both technological innovation and artisanal craftsmanship, providing a visually distinct surface with subtle color variations, further elevated by blue luminescent pigments. This new material opens doors for future watchmaking designs, placing Audemars Piguet at the forefront of innovation.

The aesthetics of the new Royal Oak Concept Split-Seconds Chronograph GMT Large Date model are as striking as the materials it features. The two-tone design pairs the deep black CFT carbon case middle with a black ceramic bezel, crown and caseback, all finished with meticulous satin-brushing and polishing techniques. The ergonomic structure of the watch, with curved edges on the case and crown, ensures that it sits comfortably on the wrist while maintaining a bold visual presence. Adding to its avant-garde appearance, the push-piece guards at 2, 4 and 9 o’clock are made from lightweight titanium to contrast the dark tones of the rest of the case.
The openworked dial, meanwhile, is a standout feat of micro-engineering. Crafted from a single sandblasted nickel silver plate, the dial features circular apertures cut into it, revealing glimpses of the intricate mechanisms within. The two-tone effect of the electric blue counters and the dark gray movement adds depth, while the absence of a logo on the dial reinforces the watch’s modern, minimalist design.
