Affordable artwork displayed in a relaxed setting where eclectic Jakartan cliques hang out-this is what The Art Department is all about. Much more than just an ordinary gallery, it offers a welcoming introduction to art scene newbies and budding artists thinking of submitting his or her work. A brainchild of three co-founders Amalia Wirjono (initiator and initial curator), Abraham Dewanggana (exhibition designer) and Hogi Wirjono (campaign and event organizer)—The Art Department brings art closer to the public, and vice versa. Hogi Wirjono spills the beans on what the future has in store.

How did The Art Department come about? 
It was my sister’s idea to initiate a gallery that’s extremely “accessible” to most people. It was in planning for a year, although initially we wanted to incorporate The Art Department into the Brightspot event (a biannual pop-up bazaar in Jakarta,) back then space was always an issue.
What’s the big picture? 
The goal is simply to develop Indonesia’s art scene. While our main focus is on introducing new local talents, we’d like established or senior artists to take part in our exhibition, or at least take notice of it. We also welcome foreign artists who’d like to contribute his or her artwork in the future. In short, it’s not an elitist game, we’re very inclusive.

Will The Art Department be present at every Goods Dept chain? 
We have one launching nextyear at The Goods Dept inPondok Indah Mall, Jakarta.However, it’ll highlightmore street art, particularlymurals, in consideration ofa different market. In thefuture, we’ll include morefine-art photography and, ifpossible, visual arts.
In a previous exhibition, you featured pieces from Erik Pauhrizi, Pramuhendra, Tromarama and Kandura Keramik, among others. What was the curatorial angle? 
Truth be told, it’s not thateasy to get these artists tocontribute their works withsuch a limited selling pricepoint in mind. The exhibitionlast June had artworksranging from Rp.500,000 toRp.5 million per piece, whichsuccessfully inspired somecustomers to purchase theirfirst art piece. We alwaysbelieve that you should buyart because you like it, ratherthan because it makes agood investment.
