PSYCHO SWAN SONG. Steven Soderbergh made a huge impact on the indie film scene with his first film, Sex, Lies and Videotape, back in 1989.
Now, twenty five years later, Soderbergh says he is done with Hollywood due to its increasingly shoddy treatment of directors. The Oscar nominated director’s says last year’s Side Effects will be his last film. If that proves to be true, it’s not a bad movie for the acclaimed director to go out on. It exhibits both his penchant for tackling tough, complicated subjects and his talent for turning them into propulsive thrillers.
Side Effects is Soderbergh’s indictment of the pharmaceuticals industry via the story of a depressed woman, played by The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’s Rooney Mara, who is prescribed a new drug by her psychiatrist, played by Jude Law. When the antidepressive turns out to have horrible side effects, Law’s character goes on a journey to find the truth about the drug and absolve his guilt. Also starring Channing Tatum and Catherine Zeta Jones, Side Effects, is a compellingly dark thriller that would make a fine final film for Soderbergh.
