As RIMOWA celebrated a milestone anniversary, we get a glimpse into the artistry that defined the brand known for its distinctive design
Renowned German maison RIMOWA marked its 125th anniversary with a star-studded celebration at the second stop of its touring exhibition, “SEIT 1898,” in New York City on September 7, 2023. This milestone event followed the exhibition’s debut in Tokyo in June, which showcased the enduring legacy of RIMOWA since its establishment in Cologne, Germany, in 1898.
New York, a city steeped in history and a hub of international travel, provided a fitting backdrop for this momentous occasion. It wasn’t just the second stop for the “SEIT 1898” exhibition, but also offered an exclusive preview of RIMOWA’s upcoming collaboration with Tiffany & Co., set to be unveiled soon. This partnership reinforces RIMOWA’s commitment to crafting pieces that embody thoughtful craftsmanship, design philosophy and cultural significance, transcending their role as mere travel tools.
The event featured an exclusive performance by British rapper Central Cee, adding a touch of glamour to the celebration. The grand opening event witnessed a dazzling array of celebrity attendees, including Rowoon, Adwoa Aboah, Eric Nam, Heron Preston, Benji B and many more.
As part of the New York showcase, RIMOWA showcased privately owned cases from notable figures such as Rose Blackpink, Spike Lee, Roger Federer, Justin Theroux, LeBron James, Lewis Hamilton and Takashi Murakami.
Additionally, a sticker diorama was also on display. Constructed from metal sheets sourced from RIMOWA factories, the diorama was set up to allow guests to further personalize the display with their own stickers. This diorama will continue its journey to Shanghai and Cologne as part of “SEIT 1898,” collecting memories and encounters along the way.
“SEIT 1898” also presents an array of cases from RIMOWA’s archives and esteemed friends of the brand, along with captivating artworks. These cases are artfully displayed in a series of evocative dioramas, each narrating the stories of the materials, craftsmanship, individuals and places that define the brand’s distinctive identity. From carefully selected archival pieces to collaborative creations and specialized cases crafted for connoisseurs, the exhibition offers a comprehensive glimpse into RIMOWA’s rich heritage.
