Louis Vuitton reimagines its pioneering Spin Time complication with the Tambour Taiko, a collection debuting curved cubes, patented mechanics and newly developed in-house calibers

Since its debut in 2009, Louis Vuitton’s Spin Time complication has remained one of the most inventive ways of displaying hours. Instead of relying on traditional hands or apertures, it uses rotating cubes that flip instantaneously—an idea inspired by the mechanical flap displays once common in airports and train stations. Conceived by Michel Navas and Enrico Barbasini at La Fabrique du Temps, Spin Time quickly became a signature of Louis Vuitton’s watchmaking vision.
Sixteen years on, the concept returns in a thoroughly reimagined form with the Tambour Taiko Spin Time, a collection that introduces new calibers, redesigned cases and updated mechanics. As one of the maison’s defining complications, Spin Time now enters a new generation. For the first time, the collection is powered by fully in-house movements developed at La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton in Geneva.
A New Era

The original Spin Time stood out for its three-dimensional reinterpretation of the jumping-hours complication. Where traditional jumping-hours rely on a flat disc, Spin Time uses cubes mounted on rotating axes, giving the display both depth and dynamism. The new Taiko models preserve this principle but refine it further: the cubes now feature gently curved faces with polished accents that catch the light, while the mechanism has been upgraded with a patented Maltese cross system that allows hours to be set forwards and backwards—an uncommon feature in jumping-hour systems.
The new Taiko case, offered in 39.5mm and 42.5mm, builds on the design language introduced with the 2023 Tambour. Named after Japanese ceremonial drums, the case is elegant, modern and exceptionally complex to finish. Its slimmer profile is achieved through precise case construction, while sculpted lugs—crafted as separate components fitted with exacting precision—give the watch a sleeker, more integrated silhouette. Finishing alternates between mirror polishing and satin brushing, with some surfaces hand-finished using traditional tools and others treated with advanced laser techniques.
All six launch models are presented in white gold, unified by a dolphin-gray dial palette. Depending on the version, the dial ranges from sunburst finishes to textured hawk’s eye quartz, creating layered plays of light and tone.
New Calibers

At the heart of the collection is a suite of new Spin Time movements developed entirely at La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton. They continue the contemporary aesthetic introduced with the 2023 LFT023 caliber: solid-gold rotors engraved with repeating LV motifs, micro-sandblasted bridges, polished bevels and transparent jewels replacing traditional red rubies.
The movements beat at a frequency of 4 Hz with automatic winding and a 45-hour power reserve. Beyond technical specifications, their design emphasizes both visual impact and durability. The redesigned cubes together with the patented mechanism beneath them underscore the level of detail invested in this second generation of the complication.
The Collection

The 39.5mm Tambour Taiko Spin Time offers the most direct expression of the complication. Powered by the LFT ST13.01 caliber, it pairs a clean dolphin-gray dial with an integrated rubber strap. A jewelry edition adds 4.3 carats of baguette-cut diamonds and a hawk’s eye dial center.
Presented in a 42.5mm case, the Tambour Taiko Spin Time Air creates the illusion of levitating cubes around a central movement. Also powered by the LFT ST13.01 caliber, this model comes in a classic white-gold version or an opulent high jewelry model set with more than 1,200 diamonds across the case, dial and cubes.
The Tambour Taiko Spin Time Air Antipode combines Spin Time with a patented world time display driven by the LFT ST12.01 caliber. Each cube carries two opposing cities, enabling all 24 time zones with day-night indication to be read at a glance around a rotating world-map disc.
And finally, the Tambour Taiko Spin Time Air Tourbillon fuses the floating Spin Time display with a central flying tourbillon. Powered by the LFT ST05.01 caliber, it places a Monogram flower–shaped tourbillon cage at the dial’s center, completing a one-minute rotation.
With this launch, what began as an experimental idea has matured into a fully realized collection. Refined in design and mechanics, enhanced with new in-house calibers and cases that elevate finishing to new heights, it stands as a milestone in contemporary haute horlogerie.
