2019 Emmy Awards: Best-Dressed Men, Unexpected Winners, and More!

The 71st Primetime Emmy Awards aired on Sunday night, September 22, 2019 at the Microsoft Theatre, Los Angeles. As expected, the most popular series of the century, “Game of Thrones” bagged the Best Drama Series award. Though nominated for 32 awards this year, “Game of Thrones” only won two awards. Its second award went to Peter Dinklage. He won the award for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his role as Tyrion Lannister. The audience honored the cast with a standing ovation.

Unexpected Winners

Milo Ventimiglia and Kit Harrington were either poised to win the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama series. But the award went to Billy Porter of “Pose,” who became the first openly gay black man to win the award.

Varity Talk Series category also surprised the audience. The 71st Primetime Emmy Awards has chosen “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” to be the winner, over “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” “Daily Show with Trevor Noah,” and “the Late Late Show with James Corden.”

Acceptance speeches were also filled with sensitive issues. Patricia Arquette of “The Act” and Michelle Williams of “Fosse/Verdon” gave equality speeches, with Arquette advocating for trans rights and Williams highlighting pay parity.
