Restaurant Review: Katsusei

CRUNCHY CRAVE. Although Japanese fare is sufficiently widespread on Jakarta’s culinary map, discovering one that tastes like the origin is rather hit-and-miss.

Among the few which serve authentic flavors is Katsusei (Sentral Senayan 1, Basement floor, Jl. Asia Afrika no. 8, Jakarta; +62 21 5731 001; katsusei.co.id). First established in Utsunomiya, Japan, Katsusei provides katsu-specialized dishes utilizing fine ingredients.

The newest outlet in town is at Sentral Senayan, boasting modern, minimalistic interiors. The
secret stays the same: Katsusei’s notable Tonkatsu sauce sumptuously complements the guests’ favorite meals. That mouth-watering sauce gets elevated in taste when mixed with toasted sesame seeds in two katsu specialties: Australian imported beef and Norwegian salmon.
