GUESS Jeans – short film for SS2011

GUESS and Ellen von Unwerth team up for another campaign that is sure to become a classic. The video soundtrack was written and performed by Mark Salling (of Glee and former DA MAN cover guy), the song is called “Illusions” and it’s from his 2006 album Pipe Dreams.

Ellen von Unwerth reprises her role as famed photographer of the classic 1980s and 1990s GUESS ad campaigns with the introduction of the GUESS spring 2011 campaign. The classic B&W images are reminiscent of the 1960s beach movies that embody that time in film history and pop culture, in general.


Cropped pants and jeans, polka-dot bustier tops, floral rompers and pin-up inspired swimwear dominate the collection of images and set the tone for the campaign for the girls.

The men’s collection ventures away from its rock ‘n’ roll influences and takes on a cleaner approach, which features cardigans, dark-wash slim jeans and plaid shirts. They complement the women’s collection.

Revealing close-up and scenic shots that transport you back to a simpler time characterized by fun in the sun, the playful footage shows a group of girls and boys enjoying carefree moments of eating, drinking, laughing, frolicking and surfing at the beach.

Alyssa Miller, the face of GUESS Seductive, alongside Elsa Hosk, Kate Upton and Silviu Tolu are the perfect cast to bring it all to life. Shot in what appears to be a beach in South Orange County, California (check the way the waves break, appears to be Three Arch Bay in Laguna), it all looks quite alluring.

“The spring 2011 campaign captures the playful, lighthearted nature of summer when there shouldn’t be a care in the world except the best wave to catch,” says Paul Marciano, Vice-Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of GUESS Inc.

“With my vision and Ellen’s talented eye we were able to capture that free-spirited moments often seen in 1960s and 1970s films and make it relevant and current.”

Guess is probably as famous for its retro-inspired bombshell model-star campaigns as it is for the label’s laid-back all-American aesthetic and this video captures all that and more.
